IBSC swimmers and parents benefited from mental health talk by En. Akif Basri

In a bit to create awareness on the importance of mental health to our swimmers, the club has today arranged a talk by clinical psychologist, En. Akif Basri at Cheras pool.

The session began with a minute of silence devoted to the late Ayrton Lim, a Sarawak swimmer who had suffered from depression lately. Participants also wore green ribbons in support of Mental Health awareness.

En. Akif shared with swimmers as well as parents, some in sights of the illness, recognising the symptoms and how to cope with our daily stress, anxiety and high expectations in life. Parents are also given tips on how to empathise with sufferers, not to be judgmental, be a good listener and how to care for those affected.

IBSC appreciates the talk by En. Akif on a pro-bono basis and hopes that the swimming community will be more aware of the issues plaguing our society in this modern world.

If you have any question pertaining to the issue of mental health, En. Akif can be contacted via email at basri.akif@gmail.com
