ALL CLASS: She's back and has lost none of her grit en route to snatching three gold medals

FORMER national swimmer Chui Lai Kwan showed her pedigree by sweeping three gold medals on the first day of the swimming competition at the inaugural Malaysian Institutions of Higher Learning Games (SUKIPT) yesterday.

Lai Kwan, who recently returned to the sport after taking a two-month break, showed no sign of slowing down as she dominated the women's 200m backstroke, 400m individual medley and 800m freestyle at the National Aquatics Complex, Bukit Jalil.

The 21-year-old Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) student said she was delighted with her performances, but felt she still has more to offer at the championships.

"Considering that I do not usually swim these distances and have only quite recently returned to training, to win here today (yesterday) in all my events is a very good result," said Lai Kwan, who left the national set-up last year after a misunderstanding with the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia.

"I feel I can swim faster and will look to do better in my other events, especially the shorter distances, as I have another nine events to go," she added.

The food science and technology undergraduate, who amassed an impressive six gold medals at the 2010 Thailand Asean University Games (AUG), said that she is also using the Games as preparation for the upcoming Laos AUG in December.

"I managed to win four gold medals in my first AUG in Kuala Lumpur (2008) and improved on that in Thailand," said Lai Kwan.

"This (Laos) will be my third time competing at the AUG and I definitely hope to better my personal achievements at the Games again.

"Competition will be tough so I am looking to prepare for the event as well as I can."

Another 10 gold medals will be up for grabs today with four more gold set to be offered in the taekwondo event which will be held at the Nilai Indoor Stadium, Negri Sembilan.

The Star : Lai Kwan eyes comeback after three-gold show

Wednesday October 31, 2012
By LIM TEIK HUAT

KUALA LUMPUR: Chui Lai Kwan (pic), once the region’s fastest freestyle swimmer, wants to make a comeback for Malaysia in the Myanmar SEA Games next year – provided she can juggle her time between studies and training.

Lai Kwan, the 50m freestyle gold medallist at the 2007 SEA Games in Korat, Thailand, splashed her way to three gold medals for Universiti Putra Malaysia on the opening day of the National Higher Education and Institution Games (SUKIPT) at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

The 21-year-old left the national team last year.

But now that she’s back in the thick of the action, it has whetted her appetite to don national colours again.

“I would love to go for my fifth SEA Games next year ... but I feel that my chances of coming back is 50-50 for now.

“I have two more years to go and next year is an important stage of my studies in the field of Food, Science and Technology at UPM.

“I have to undergo practical training for six months from next February. But, if the time permits and I can handle both things, I will go for it,” said Lai Kwan, who reached the final of the 100m freestyle at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games and Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010.

As expected, Lai Kwan won comfortably in the women’s 200m backstroke, 400m individual medley and 800m freestyle.

She still has a chance to claim nine more golds for her contingent in the remaining three days.

The Sabah-born Lai Kwan, who still holds the national records for the 50m and 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke, made her SEA Games debut in Vietnam in 2003 with a bronze and has never failed to deliver a medal each time.

Lai Kwan, however, is not the only former national swimmer in action as 2008 Beijing Olympian Leung Chii Lin is also swimming for University Malaya (UM).

Chii Lin won two gold medals in the 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle yesterday.

The Star Metro : Education reward for sportsmen

Friday October 26, 2012
By Y.P.SIVAM
Ready for gold: Dr Saharudin with the mascot and challenge trophy for SUKIPT.

GOLD medal winners at the Higher Learning Institution Games (SUKIPT), starting in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, will have the privilege of applying for scholarships from the Higher Education Ministry.

Higher Education Ministry sports division secretary Dr Saharudin Ismail said 101 contingents would be taking part in the inaugural games.

“The games are a platform for students from higher learning institutions to display their talents in sports.

“We have also invited private learning institutions to be part of the games.

“It is an opportunity for them to play an active role in the games. The gold medallists will be considered for scholarships by the ministry.

“The games can be considered as a gathering of about 15,000 people including sportsmen, sportswomen, officials and volunteers,’’ said Dr Saharudin.

SUKIPT involves 15 sports — badminton, netball, volleyball, archery, shooting, swimming, taekwondo, bowling, tennis, rugby 7s, athletics, sepak takraw, beach volleyball, chess and karate.

Seven other championships organised by the Higher Education Ministry will also be considered in the determination of the overall champions.

The seven are golf, table tennis, silat, three-on-three basketball, futsal, boat race and football.

Except for football, the winners of the other six sports have been decided. The final of the football competition will be held at the UiTM Sports Complex in Shah Alam on Nov 6.

UiTM are currently leading the medal tally with 17 gold, three silver and 10 bronze medals.

However, Dr Saharudin believes the situation could change when the SUKIPT starts.

“A total 165 gold medals are at stake in the SUKIPT. The bulk of them are in swimming and athletics.

“It will be an exciting competition. All the contingents have been preparing well for the games,’’ said Saharudin.

Sin Chew Daily :

Pre-Stroke Swim Class

In a move to encourage more swimmers to take up competitive swimming, IBSC has recently introduced a new swimming class called Pre-Stroke Class for junior swimmers. The Pre-Stroke class was initiated by IBSC Head Coach, Coach Shazali since May 2012 and young swimmers who have already gone through the learn to swim process and who are pretty confident in water will be best suited to join this class.

The course of the swim class includes :
  • light land exercise to strengthen the body and core muscles
  • swimming laps in the short pool
  • streamlining the swim
  • learning starting and diving
  • learning flip turns

Pre-requisite of the swimmers are :
  • able to swim any 3 of the 4 strokes, either freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly
  • able to swim at least 25 metres of the pool

Regular classes are scheduled every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 5.00 pm. to 6.30 pm. Duration of the course will generally be 6 months after which the swimmers will progress to join the intermediate swimming classes.

There are many benefits that can be reaped from the class and these juniors will be better prepared to face swimming competition more confidently. It is also an avenue where children can learn and experience a team environment.

If your child is keen to join the above class, please contact IBSC Head Coach at 012-9163 797 or just drop by the training pool at Bandar Tun Razak on the designated days for a preview.

Please download Pre-Stroke Registration Form here.

The NST : Sportcheck - Take advantage, urges Tunku Imran

09 October 2012

OLYMPIC Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar has stressed that national sports associations (NSA) need to ramp up their efforts at the grassroots and junior development level if government funding for sports is to be utilised to its full potential.

Tunku Imran said the generous budget for sports recently unveiled by the government showed its serious approach to promoting sports in the country, however, he believed all the efforts would be hampered due to a lack of new quality talent for further development.

"We are not doing enough in terms of talent development to complement the huge training and capital expenditure contributed by the government," said Tunku Imran at the SportExcel individual funding presentation ceremony at Bukit Kiara yesterday.

"The lack of comprehensive strategic development blueprints on the part of many of our NSAs, including those which are Olympic sports, make it harder to find talent with the caliber to shine on the international stage.

"I have long stressed that we are running out of quality talent in a number of sports with squash being one such example."

Tunku Imran, who is also SportExcel chairman, added that he hoped NSAs would be more aggressive in promoting sports at school and community level to overcome the problem.

"Strategic development by working closely with schools and also the ministry is a good way to boost sports at the grassroots.

"With the one student, one sport initiative (by Education Ministry) in place, sport has now been given more priority in schools.

"I hope that NSAs will go into schools more and look to use the facilities available there to determine and groom new talent for the future."

A total 47 junior athletes from nine sports received grants from SportExcel totalling RM66,500 yesterday. The funds are intended to supplement the athletes' accommodation, travel, equipment, sports science support and coaching expenses.

Each athlete was nominated by his/her respective NSA based on his/her performances in 2011 with the final selection being made by SportExcel.

The nine sports are cricket, cycling, golf, tennis, tenpin bowling, rhythmic and artistic gymnastics, shooting, squash and swimming.

The Star Metro : First short-course swim meet draws 500 participants

THE Selangor Amateur Swimming Association (SASA) created history by organising a short-course swimming championships at the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre in Shah Alam recently.

The event — Selangor Arena Short Course Sprints Swimming championships — was a big success with about 500 participants taking part. Meet manager Ong Jin Kooi said the short-course sprints was included in the Fina calendar.

“But there has never been any short course championships in Malaysia. We decided to initiate the programme. It is different from the normal swimming events.

Off they go : The participants plunging from the starting blocks.
“The distance is shorter and a participant has to make three turns instead of two, for the 100m. It is quite technical and the participants will have to be fit. We are happy with the response.

“The participants will gain valuable and eventually improve in their respective events,’’ said Jin Kooi.

The organisers also introduced the 100m individual medley and the 4x25m relays (freestyle and medley). These events are not in the FINA programme but Jin Kooi said they wanted to provide a platform for the participants to evaluate themselves.

“We received positive feedback from the participants. In fact, we were surprised with the presence of parents who came in big numbers to cheer their children on,’’ he added.

The organisers also decided to give cash incentives to best boy and girl swimmer in each of the four age groups. There were winners in the state and novice categories.

All set : The championships taking place at the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre in Shah Alam
Following the success of the championships, Jin Kooi said they were looking forward to organising an invitational championships next year.

“We want to invite participants from other states as well as neighbouring countries for next year’s championships.

“In the long run we will have swimmers to represent Malaysia in the FINA organised world championships,’’ said Jin Kooi.

The championships also served as a platform for SASA to identify potential swimmers for the 2014 Malaysia Games.

Selangor did extremely well in this year’s Malaysia Games in Kuantan, Pahang.

Jin Kooi said they had started training programmes for the next Malaysia Games.

“We have a strong tradition in the Malaysia Games. We want to continue our dominance,’’ he added.

The Star : Birmingham to stay

Friday October 5, 2012
By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: National swimming coach Paul Birmingham (pic) will stay put in Malaysia but expects a change of guard in the squad as the country looks at ways to make a bigger splash in the international arena.

At the London Olympic Games in August, Malaysian swimmers were overshadowed by the divers.

Malaysia had only two qualifiers in swimming – Khoo Cai Lin and Heidi Gan – while the diving squad showed their depth by parading nine qualifiers, led by Pandelela Rinong.

Cai Lin did not go beyond the heats in the 800m freestyle while Heidi put up a commendable showing en route to finishing 16th in the 10km marathon.

But it was Pandelela who stole the show with her historic bronze medal effort in the 10m individual platform event to become Malaysia’s first woman Olympic medallist and put diving in the same elite league as badminton.

This has led to Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) secretary Edwin Chong telling critics to watch out for new faces in the national team.

“Paul will continue to lead the national swimming team but we need to make some changes in the training programme. New faces will be identified at the end of this year,” said Edwin.

Australian Paul, who has been in Malaysia since 2007, has done well to improve the standard of the swimmers. He led Malaysia to a big success at the Laos SEA Games in 2009 and guided several swimmers to qualify for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games on merit.

“Paul has earmarked some new talents ... their names will be revealed later. Asum have no problems over the small participation of swimmers at the London Olympics but we know that we need to bring in new faces and give them the correct exposure if we are to move forward,” said Edwin.

Malaysia lost several good swimmers at the start of the year, including Siow Yi Ting, Leung Chii Lin and Chui Lai Kwan.

Besides Olympian Cai Lin, some of the more prominent members of the swim team are Daniel Bego, Kevin Yeap, Christina Loh, Vernon Lee, Lim Ching Hwang, Yap See Tuan, Ian James Barr, Erika Kong, Hii Siew Siew and Marellyn Liew.

Daniel, the top male athlete at the Laos SEA Games, may not last long in the team as he is battling injuries.

Edwin said that although the swimmers are training diligently under Paul’s watchful eyes daily, there will be no major tournaments for them until the end of the year.

“This is the examination period for many of the national swimmers and we want them to concentrate on their studies. Most of the major tournaments are over anyway,” he said.
