IBSC swimmers smashed 2 records in MSSM 2017
The MSSM Swimming Championship 2017 was held at Pusat Akuatik Hang Jebat for 4 days from 19 - 23 March, 2017 and has just came to an end this afternoon.
The IBSC swimmers representing their respective schools in Klang Valley gave their best performances and have been doing stupendously well especially Steve Khiew and Sebastian Soon. Both have been eyeing to smash some meet records and they did achieved their goals during day 2 and day 4 of the annual meet.
Steve Khiew who swam the U15 years category, improved his 200m backstroke PB to 2:10.74 to break Ian James Barr's 2010 record of 2:10.97. His advanced backstroke left an immense gap, leaving Ng Yee Sheng (Melaka) trailing to reach second placing some 11 seconds later.
In his individual events, Steve accumulated 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze in MSSM 2017. A Victorian Institution student, Steve expressed his thanks to PRAKL, Coach Zhang and his family for their support. He assured further, " I will continue to put in more effort in my swimming training to get higher achievement."
Meanwhile, Sebastian Soon, who has just joined the national team 3 months back, was on track to target a new record in 400m IM when he clocked 4:40.47 erasing last year's record of 4:43.41 made by Jordan Yip, in the U18 years boys category. Sebastian was confident with the achievement as his recent timing in the 53rd Malaysia Invitational Age Group Swimming Championship 2017 has already surpassed the MSSM meet record.
On the third day of the meet, Sebastian narrowly missed out the 200m IM meet record of 2:11.33, when he touched first at 2:11.72. Sebastian, representing SMK Yu Hwa, Kajang, hopes he will continue to do better in MSSM 2018.
Overall, Seb, as he is fondly known, is contended with his win of 4 gold and 2 silver including the relay, and he earned the second highest points in his age group.
" I want to thank ASUM for drafting me into the national squad and I hope to continue my improvement under Coach Birmingham. I hope to represent the country to swim in bigger meets in the future", said Sebastian.
IBSC swimmers have shown great achievements in the national school meet and the EXCO congratulate all of the medalists below :

The NST : Selangor tops medal tally, but Malaccan Zheng Yong steals spotlight at National Schools Swimming Championships
By ARNAZ M. KHAIRUL - March 23, 2017 @ 6:46pm
Malacca's Low Zheng Yong completed his haul of seven gold medals in the under-15 boys' category to emerge the best swimmer of the meet, as he cast his eye on the Malaysia Games in Perak next year as his next big target.
Fourteen-year-old Zheng Yong, from Yok Bin Secondary School here, today won the under-15 200m butterfly gold medal in impressive style, coming within a whisker of another meet record as he clocked 2:09.95s at the board, more than three seconds clear of second-placed Koh Teck Chen of Kuala Lumpur.
"I had improved a lot in the past year after I put a lot of focus on training. My target is now the Malaysia Games next year – I want to bag my first medal there," said Zheng Yong.
"I tasted the Malaysia Games in Sarawak last year as one of the youngest swimmers, and I made the 200m butterfly final. So, next year, I want to go a step further by winning a medal there," he added.
Zheng Yong also bagged the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, 50m and 100m butterfly and the 200m individual medley gold medals earlier in the competition, to add to his 200m butterfly yesterday.
He bagged the 100m butterfly by smashing Daniel Bego's 13-year old meet record.
The MSSM National Schools Swimming Championships closed accounts with Selangor emerging overall champion with a haul of 39 gold, 25 silver, and 25 bronze medals – well ahead of second-placed Penang, which bagged 15 gold, 13 silver, and 10 bronze medals.

The NST : Sebastian Soon aims for Sea Games with record-breaking MSSM championships feat
By ARNAZ M. KHAIRUL - March 23, 2017
MALACCA: Sebastian Soon is hoping he has done enough to be included in the national squad for the Sea Games after smashing the under-18 400m individual medley meet record at the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Swimming Championships in Malacca yesterday.
But Malacca's new sensation, Low Zheng Yong, who bagged his sixth gold medal, was quick to cast a shadow over the more senior swimmers, with eye-opening performances.
In fact, it was the 14-year old Low, swimming in the under-18 400m individual medley, who was closest to giving the 16-year old Soon a run for his money, finishing 10 seconds adrift as Soon clocked 34:40.47s to better Jordan Yip's year-old mark of 4:43.41s by three seconds.
Soon looks towards a fruitful year with an aim of establishing himself further in the national squad, while Low said he will focus on his PT3 exams this year, before making a serious push for the national squad next year, something that seems his destiny based on his performances.
"I've been training six times a week with the national squad, so I guess this has been fruitful," said Soon, after bagging his third gold medal of the meet.
The SMJK Yu Hua, Kajang, student has been making daily trips to the Kampung Pandan Sports Complex in Kuala Lumpur, where the national squad is having its temporary training base while awaiting completion of refurbishment works at the National Aquatics Centre.
"I am hoping that I might get into the national squad for the Sea Games, but otherwise, I will focus on a few international age group meets this year and the Malaysia Open, which will be a non-age group event where I can prove myself further," said Soon, whose elder brother, Nicholas, is also in the national squad.
"I had put in a lot of hard work since last year's MSSM National Championships and this time, I've improved my 200m individual medley time by three seconds and over 400 metres, my time has improved by eight seconds," said Soon.
On his home ground and at his usual training pool, Low was not to be denied another day of limelight, when he bagged the under-15 boys 200m breaststroke gold medal after renewing Ng Yi Hao's three-year old record of 2:27.14s by almost five seconds, with a time of 2:32.81s.
"I've put a lot of work into this for the past year, but even with the PT3 exams this year, I will still be focusing on improving my performances further," said Yok Bin Secondary School student Low, after setting his second meet record.
The relays saw the Kuala Lumpur under-15 quartet of Khiew Hoe Yan, Lee Jia Jin, Koh Teck Chen and Zachary Lim complete a rare double together in the 4x100m medley. Having combined to win the under-12 gold at the MSSM meet two years ago, they yesterday completed the second gold together, by winning the same event in the under-15 category and will be looking to go on to complete the historic treble with the under-18 gold.
In the girls' section, there was no stopping Selangor's Nadia Adrianna Redza in the middle distance event, after she romped to the 200m breaststroke and 400m individual medley, before combining to win the under-18 4x100m medley gold for Selangor to bring her personal tally to four gold medals.
This was despite admitting to a slump in form, having put a lot of emphasis in her final year of secondary school at the International School Kuala Lumpur (ISKL), after which she has a slot at the University of Chicago in the United States waiting for her.
"Studies have been taking up a lot of my time, so I was not too surprised that my times had dropped. I will be focusing on my studies and next year, I will move to the United States, where I will continue to improve my swimming, along with my studies," said Nadia, 17.
The MSSM National Swimming Championships conclude today.

The Star : Sebastian smashes meet record in U-18 400m IM event

Going all out: Selangor’s Sebastian Soon in action during the boys’ Under-18 400m individual medley event of the MSSM swimming championships at the Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre in Malacca yesterday. — A. Malex Yahaya / The Star
PETALING JAYA: There’s no substitute to hard work.
Just ask Selangor swimmer Sebastian Soon.
The 16-year-old provided the icing on the cake with a new meet record in the boys’ Under-18 400m individual medley as Selangor sealed the overall champions title on the penultimate day of the MSSM (national schools) swimming championships at the Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre in Malacca yesterday.
Sebastian’s 4:40.47 improved on team-mate Jordan Yip’s record of 4:43.41 set last year.
Malacca’s Low Zheng Yong (4:50.21) took silver and Kuala Lumpur’s Khiew Hoe Yean (4:50.37) the bronze.
It was the third individual gold medal for Sebastian at the meet, having come out tops in the 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley earlier.
Last year, Sebastian was named the overall best swimmer in the boys’ category in Shah Alam, where he broke a meet record and won eight medals – six golds and two silvers.
Sebastian, who travels daily from SMJK Yu Hua in Kajang to the Kampung Pandan Sports Complex in Kuala Lumpur where the national swimmers train, hopes he has done enough to stake a place in the national squad for the KL SEA Games from Aug 19-31. “I’ve been training six times a week with the national squad ... so I guess all my hard work is paying off,” said Sebastian.
“I’m happy I took eight seconds off my personal best in the 400m individual medley.
“I hope to be picked for the SEA Games. I still have a few age-group meets and the Malaysia Open, also at this pool, in May to prove myself.”
Penang’s Tong Yu Jing was the other record-breaker in the boys’ Under-12 50m freestyle event. He clocked 27.62 to erase the previous mark of 27.64 set by Selangor’s Lim Ching Hwang in 2008. Malacca’s Zheng Yong took his tally to six golds after winning the boys’ Under-15 200m breaststroke event in 2:27.14.
Selangor lead the medal standings with a haul of 33-21-21, with 12 more events today.
Penang are second on 14-13-8, ahead of Kuala Lumpur (10-17-21) and hosts Malacca (10-5-2).

The NST : KL swim quartet making waves with rare double feat
By ARNAZ M. KHAIRUL - March 22, 2017 @ 10:22pm ARNAZ M. KHAIRUL
MALACCA: Amid the flood of new talents making big splashes at the MSSM National Schools Swimming Championships in Malacca, a bustling and busy Kuala Lumpur quartet emerged with a rare double of having completed a medley relay in the same order in two consecutive age groups.
Khiew Hoe Yan kicked off the relay with the backstroke leg, then Lee Jia Jing took the breastroke leg, Koh Teck Chen the butterfly and Zachary Lim rounded off the under-15 4x100m medley relay in for the quartet to come within a whisker of wiping out the meet record of 4:09.82s set by a Daniel Bego-powered Sarawak quartet six years ago.
They had set 4:10.91s, but that did not matter. What mattered was they had completed a second gold medal in the same relay sequence as they did in the under-12 category four years ago, a rarity in a sport where relay squads change with virtually every meet.
"We're from different schools but with the same heart!" exclaimed Khiew, who with Zachary attends the Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur.
"Not only that, we train with different coaches!" Teck Chen, who goes to the Sri Sentosa Secondary School adds.
"But we meet each time there are swimming meets such as these and we are good friends."
Lee goes to the Taylors International School Kuala Lumpur (TISKL) and says their friendship also drives them to perform well together.
"We used to train under the same coach five years ago, when we started swimming for Kuala Lumpur. But then the coach left and we have our own coaches. But when meets like these come up, we are always together and we have a strong team spirit," said Lee.
Their next aim will definitely be to complete the rarest of feats in the MSSM National Schools Swimming Championships, the treble by clinching the under-18 category 4x100m medley gold, which could be possible within the next three years.
Meanwhile, the home favourite, Malacca's newfound sensation Low Zheng Yong, 14, today romped to his sixth gold medal after bagging the under-15 200m breaststroke gold, while he also moved up a category to give Selangor's Sebastian Soon a run for his money in the under-18 400m individual medley.
Zheng Yong finished second in 4:50.21s, 10 seconds adrift of the 16-year old Soon who bagged the gold medal in meet record time of 4:40.47s.
In the girls' section, Selangor's Nadia Adrianna Redza put on a show of true endurance by bagging three middle distance golds to bring her tally to four gold medals.
She started off by taking the 200m breaststroke gold, before totally dominating the field to take the 400m individual medley gold and then combined with Rosalind Pang, Liew Chern Xin and Fatin Amira Ahmad Hadri to take the 4x100m medley gold medal for Selangor.

The Star : A high five for swimmer Low at MSSM championships
BY LIM TEIK HUAT
MALACCA: Low Zheng Yong emerged as the star performer again for hosts Malacca as Selangor inched closer to a successful defence of their overall title in the MSSM (national schools) Swimming Championships.
The 14-year-old added another meet record to his name when he won the boys’ Under-15 200m individual medley gold at the Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre yesterday.
Zheng Yong clocked 2:14.73 to equal Selangor’s Sebastian Soon’s record set in last year’s championships.
It was Zheng Yong’s fifth gold and his second meet record, having smashed Sarawakian Daniel Bego’s 13-year-old 100m butterfly mark on Monday.
Zheng Yong, a student at SMJK Yok Bin, had earlier won the 50m and 100m butterfly as well as the 50m and 100m breaststroke.
It was, however, not a good day for Selangor’s Rosalind Pang as she failed to add to her four-gold tally in the girls’ Under-18 category. She could only manage three silvers yesterday.
The 16-year-old lost to Penang’s Elynn Tan in the 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle and team-mate Nadia Adrianna Redza in the 200m individual medley.
Selangor still lead the overall standings with a 23-18-14 haul after three days of competition.
Penang are a distant second on 10-10-7 followed by Kuala Lumpur (9-14-16) and Malacca (9-4-2).

Selangor’s Rosalind makes a splash with three golds
MALACCA: Rosalind Pang splashed to three golds to give defending champions Selangor a superb start at the MSSM (national schools) Swimming Championships here.
The 16-year-old held off Johor’s Ong Yong Qi in the last lap to win the girls’ 800m freestyle Open in 9:44.04 at the Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre yesterday.
Yong Qi clocked 9:45.86 for the silver ahead of Kuala Lumpur’s Geogene Wee who finished in 9:54.95.
Rosalind still had enough energy to clinch her second gold in the Under-18 100m backstroke. She came out tops in 1:08.39 ahead of Kuala Lumpur’s Karla Lim (1:09.74) and Nurlatifa Zahra (1:12.28).
Rosalind returned to the pool shortly after to take her third gold in the Under-18 200m freestyle. She clocked 2:14.85. Penang’s Elynn Tan secured the silver with a time of 2:16.10 while Sabahan Lo Meng Sum clocked 2:16.69 for bronze.
“I have six more individual events, so I hope to maintain my form. This is my first year in the 16-18 age-group and I’m focusing more on the longer distance races,” said Rosalind, who bagged eight golds for Selangor in the Under-15 category last year.
Hosts Malacca also rejoiced with four golds on the opening day.
Low Zheng Yong contributed two golds, winning the 50m butterfly (27.04) and 50m breaststroke (31.81) in the boys’ Under-15 category.
The others came from R. Parvin in the boys’ Under-18 50m butterfly (26.99) and Goh Chia Tong in the girls’ Under-15 100m backstroke (1:09.20).

The Star : Welson bags two golds to underline SEA Games ambition
BY LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: Welson Sim sent a warning to his rivals that he means business in the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games with a double golden splash at the Singapore National Age-Group Swimming Championships.
The 19-year-old swam a powerful last lap to win the 400m freestyle gold in 3:52.89 in the boys’ 18 and over category at the OCBC Aquatic Centre on Saturday.
Welson’s time was inside his own SEA Games record of 3:53.97 set at the same venue in 2015.
Indonesian Perwira Aflah Fadlan grabbed the silver in 3:55.88 ahead of Singapore’s Pang Sheng Jun who clocked 3:55.91.
It was the second gold for Welson. Earlier on Wednesday, he emerged triumphant after a hard-fought 200m freestyle win in the 18 and over class.
Welson, who made his Olympic debut under Category A in Rio de Janeiro last year, was a bronze medallist in the 200m freestyle at the 2015 SEA Games and clearly indicated he is going for the gold in KL in August.
“Welson posted decent timings. We’re still in training mode at this time of the year,” said national coach Paul Birmingham.
Welson was the only Malaysian gold medallist after four days of competition.
Caroline Chan, competing in the girls’ 18 and over, contributed a silver for Malaysia when she clocked 29.71 in the 50m backstroke.
Wong Fu Kang was the other silver medallist for Malaysia. He posted his season’s best time of 1:02.73 in the boys’ 18 and over 100m breaststroke final.
Malaysia also bagged two bronzes through Tern Jian Han in the boys’ 18 and over 50m backstroke (26.71) and Chan Jie in the boys’ 18 and over 100m butterfly (54.29).

Team Kuala Lumpur is the MIAG 2017 Champion Team!
The 53rd Malaysia Invitational Swimming Championships 2017 has just ended this afternoon in Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre, Malacca after a 4-day stiff competition.
This year, Team Kuala Lumpur did excellently well compared to the past years as swimmers scooped up golds after golds each day to help the team to be poised on top, eventually ending a champion drought for the last one decade. The team doubled the number of gold achieved last year with 40 gold in hand to narrowly win the championship.
The team, with 60 swimmers, could have done even better if not for some unexpected slip of gold in certain events. But overall, the whole KL squad is high in spirit as motivation from coaches, peers, parents and support teams all poured in overwhelmingly to uplift the morale and energy of the team.
We congratulate all winners, medalists who broke records, swimmers who shed PBs and all those who have supported the team from various angles, near and far!
Thanks to coaches, team managers, chaperones and volunteers for the hard work and dedicated support. Also our appreciation to our sponsors MADWAVE, CS Foundation, ARENA and Under Armour Singapore for believing in us!
CONGRATULATIONS!
Keep logging on for official results soon!
