Encouraging achievement by junior Ikan Bilises in Leg 1 of SportExcel

The 2017 SportExcel Milo-NSC-ASUM Junior Swimming Circuit Leg 1 has just ended yesterday after a 2-day exciting and competitive performance by our swimmers at Pusat Akuatik Darul Ehsan, Shah Alam. This event has attracted more than 1,000 swimmers from various clubs around Malaysia. For our own Team IBSC alone, we achieved a record registration of 127 young and talented swimmers eager to compete.

As many of our senior swimmers have surpassed the eligible age, our sprouting juniors are left to fend for the club. Young as they may be but their effort has paid off well outperforming our initial expectation as IBSC concluded the swim meet with 4 golds, 13 silvers and 9 bronze to accumulate 2064.5 points to rank 2nd behind PADE Supershark, who won with a slim margin of 18.5 points, given up by IB in some unexpected DQs.

Nevertheless, IB is proud with the collaborated achievements brought in by medalists and swimmers. Congrats to all our points contributors as well as swimmers who have improved by leaps and bounds.

Top performer was Steve Khiew, who bagged 3 gold medals in 50 back, 100 back, 100 free and a bronze to amassed 174 points in total. The top junior girl was Liew Xiao Rou who delivered 167 points with her collection of 4 bronze. Thanks to all coaches involved in bringing the awesome results.

Special thanks to the Assistant Team Manager, En. Nizarudin, our Chaperones, Choi Ling and Lily, and also all the parents who are cooperative in making this a successful outing. I wish all the best to IBSC swimmers in the 2nd leg of SportExcel in Malacca and believe IBSC can retain the overall champion this year.

SportExcel Junior Swimming Circuit 2017, Leg 2 Invite

Kindly note that the invite for 2017 SportExcel Junior Swimming Circuit Leg 2 has been received from the organiser, MASA, Malacca Amateur Swimming Association and the competition will be held as follows :

Date : 20 - 21, May 2017 (Sat - Sun)
Time : 8.00 a.m.
Venue : Pusat Akuatik Stadium Hang Jebat, Melaka
Rules : FINA rules apply
Date of Reckoning : 1 January, 2017

Age Group : Group 2, 3 and 4 (ie. up to age 14 years only)
Eligibility : Malaysian citizens who are members of affiliated clubs of ASUM
Entry Fees : RM5 per event

IBSC Team Briefing - SportExcel Leg 1, 2017

Dear IBSC swimmers,

Kindly be informed that the Team Briefing for SportExcel Junior Swimming Circuit 2017, Leg 1 is scheduled this Friday, 14 April 2017 at 7 pm, at Cheras pool.

Your Team Managers, Mr CK Wong and En. Nizarudin will brief swimmers on the do's and don'ts at the swim meet. It is compulsory for pre-comp swimmers and those new at the competitions to attend the briefing.

School leave letters, if needed, will be distributed during the briefing.

Steve netted 5th gold in concluding day of race

Steve Khiew concluded the final day of swimming at Thailand Age Group 2017 by netting the last gold in his 200m IM under Group2 boys yesterday.

Earlier in the preliminary heats, Steve was in third placing with a time of 2:20.10 to book a place in the finals, with top 2 placing available to foreigners only. Later in the determining race, he swam his best time of 2:13.05 shedding more than 2 seconds off his PB to claim gold. Trailing behind was Hong Kong swimmer, Benson Wong (2:16.13) who got silver and a Thai swimmer settled for bronze at 2:16.28.

The game concluded yesterday with Team Malaysia, consisting of only 4 swimmers, bringing home 6 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze contributed all team members.  Steve Khiew triumphed with 5 gold collection.

Congratulations to all winners, Steve Khiew, Sebastian Soon, Chan Jun Jian and Low Ken Ji for their commendable achievements in this outing. Credits also to KL coach, Coach Zhang Hongbo and chaperon, Ms Carrina Goh, for accompanying the team to Bangkok.

4th Gold for Steve in Thailand Age Group

Steve Khiew's desire for more gold lingered on, on the 4th day of the Thailand Age Group Swimming Championships 2017 as he's insatiable. In the Group 2 boys event, he flipped up another gold easily in his pet event, 200m backstroke, by maintaining his time of 2:11.91s.

His competitior from India, Vedant Bapna, came second 2:16.95 to claim silver whilst Thai swimmer, Peerakrit took bronze at 2:18.05s.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   

Meanwhile, earlier in the morning, team mate, Chan Jun Jian had a chance to improve his long distance swim of 1,500m freestyle by improving his 17 minute PB to 16:52.87 and deserves a mention on 4th position overall in the Group 1 boys category.

The game will close today on the 5th day, 5 April, 2017. We wish the KL Team all the best in their final endeavour.

Tri-Colour Achievement by KL swimmers

The Speedo Thai nationals progressed to the third day today with a tri-colour achievement by KL swimmers starting with Steve Khiew who aced gold in his 100m backstroke in Group 2 boys, team mate Chan Jun Jian clamped a silver in 400m freestyle and lastly Sebastian procured a bronze in 200m butterfly in Group 1 boys.

In the morning preliminary, Steve was also on top of the qualifying list when he swam 1:02.88 to book a place in the final. In the ultimate race, Steve managed to better his personal best time slightly by touching first at 1:01.36 ahead of 2 Thai swimmers, Preediyatorn Obcheoy (1:03.65) and  Sithikon Wtchaiyo (1:03.72).

Obviously, size is not a hindrance to Steve. Well done!

Team mate, Chan Jun Jian, did not want to be left out in the medallion squad too, as he salvaged a silver in 400m freestyle under Group 1 boys with a time of 4:11.07, slicing off more than 3 seconds from his PB. The first placing was won by Indian swimmer, Kusha Rawat at 4:10.28 and the third placed was staged by Hong Kong swimmer, Lam Chak Hang at 4:11.22.

Sebastian Soon resumed his search for more medals on the third day, but has to settle for a bronze in 200m butterfly event under Group 1 boys after 2 Thai rivals stormed faster to reach at 2:05.21 and 2:08.30 to claim the top 2 positions. However, Sebastian will have to be contented for the time being, as his bronze timing of 2:09.66 is by far his personal best since he clocked 2:10.06 in MIAG 2017 just last month.

We wish the KL team all the best in their unfinished events and missions tomorrow and the day after.

Golden Thai venture continues for duo

400m free medalist, with Steve winning the gold for Group 2 boys

The second day of the SPEEDO Thailand Age Group Swimming Championships 2017 proved to be even more fruitful as Sebastian Soon (Group 1 boys) and Steve Khiew (Group 2 boys) continued their search for more gold today.

In the 400m freestyle event which was swum on a time final basis, Steve bettered his personal best time in MSSM 2017 of 4:15.02 by shedding 3 seconds off. He touched the wall first at 4:12.08 ahead of Thai Peerapat Pandee who came second at 4:12.45. The bronze was collected by Hong Kong swimmer, Dylan Ethan Tsui, when he came third at 4:21.41.

Meanwhile, Sebastian was fairly confident in one of his favourite mid distance event of 400m IM. In the final-timed competition, he led the race in all the 8 laps and undoubtedly emerged to secure the gold at 4:39.99, charting a new faster time he just clocked last month in MSSM 2017.

2 Hong Kong swimmers, Michael Yu and Lam Chak Hang, were tailing him to finish 4:41.42 and 4:46.88 respectively.

Meanwhile, KL compatriot, Low Ken Ji, also qualified himself into the afternoon final, when he came 7th position in the 50m freestyle preliminary heats at 25.31s. In the final, Ken Ji sped to record a PB of 24.82s in the  Group 1 boys even though he is only 15 years of age, to claim a bronze. 

Ken Ji took bronze after the Thai boys snatched gold and silver at 24.36s and 24.47s.

Congratulations to all the IBSC swimmers on their dazzling performance thus far in the Siamese kingdom.

The top 8 finishers of the Heats of each individual event (with the exception of Timed Final races) is eligible to compete in the Finals. Should there be more than 2 foreign swimmers who finish within the top 8 positions at the Heats, only the top 2 fastest foreign swimmers would compete in the Final.

FINA has approved the Speedo Thailand Age Group Swimming Championships 2017 as meets where swimmers can achieve the FINA “A” and “B” Swimming Qualifying Standard Times for FINA World Championships Budapest 2017.

The race is ongoing until 5 April, 2017 at Thammasat University Swimming Pool, Rangsit Campus, Pathum Thani.

Steve and Sebastian dawned opening day with a gold and silver in Thailand Age Group Swimming Championships 2017

The 4 KL lads were full of motivation when they were sent by the Persatuan Renang Amatur Kuala Lumpur (PRAKL) to gain some valuable experience in Thailand Age Group Swimming Championships 2017 in Bangkok. Steve Khiew, Chan Jun Jian, Low Ken Ji and Sebastian Soon was led by Coach Zhang to Bangkok for the Speedo sponsored annual age group meet at Thammasat University from 1 April, 2017 to 5 April, 2017.

Steve Khiew, 14 is a promising athlete with high potential to bring home some medals. He proved himself on the first day of the meet in the 400m IM event under Group 2 boys, where he swam to gold at 4:48.58 to better his own personal record. In the second and third place were both Thais, Ratchaphum Chailanga (4:56.10) and Sithikon Wtchaiyo (4:58.12).

Later in the day, Sebastian Soon, 15, managed a silver in his 200m IM under Group 1 boys even though he is in the disadvantaged age bracket. Sebastian came second with a time of 2:12.21, after the Hong Kong swimmer, Ng Yu Hin (2:11.96)

Had Sebastian uphold his personal best of 2:11.72, which he clocked in MSSM2017 just last month, the gold could be within his grab.
