The Star : Malaysian relay quartet set new national record

Quick reflexes: Welson Sim in action during the men’s 4x100m freestyle at the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatic Centre yesterday.

THIS is for you, coach.

Welson Sim anchored the Malaysian relay quartet to a new national record in the men’s 4x100m freestyle event at the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatic Centre last night as a gift for outgoing national coach Paul Birmingham.

The quartet of Chan Jie, Foong Wei Tze, Keith Lim and Welson powered their way to finish sixth place in a time of 3:21.06 in the final.

Chan Jie, Keith, Lim Ching Hwang and Welson set the previous national mark of 3:21.79 at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games last year.

“We wanted to do something for our coach (Paul Birmingham).

“I was confident we can bring down the national record tonight as we were just one second off the mark.

“I am happy to achieve something here,” said Welson, who is from Sarawak.

It was the second national record for Welson.

He clocked 8:12.46 to improve on his personal best of 8:12.74 in the 800m freestyle – a non-Olympic event – on Monday.

Rio Olympic swimmer Phee Jinq En will take to the lanes to aim to qualify for the women’s 50m breaststroke final today.

Super-duper Dhuha won Overall Champion in 7th SELANGOR ARENA Short Course Sprint Swimming Championship 2018

Super-duper Muhd. Dhuha Zulkifry, is no small fry in Ikan Bilis team when it comes to sprinting in water.

Although a year younger than all his senior competitors in Group 4, this 9 year old boy displayed awesome power in his swimming ability and had just awed everyone at the pool when he claimed victory of 9 gold in the 7th Selangor ARENA Short Course Swimming Championship 2018. The annual invitational meet was held from 17th to 19th August, 2018 at Pusat Akuatik Darul Ehsan, Shah Alam.

Muhd Dhuha, 9, was named the Overall Champion and Age Group Champion (Group 4 Boys) in the short course meet

Dhuha broke 2 meet records to deserve the Overall Champion title. On the first day he swam to a new record of 2:21.93 in 200m freestyle to erase a 2016 time of 2:23.67. He also went on to break the 100m butterfly meet record with his flying time of 1:10.15.

When asked about his achievement, Dhuha responded; "This is my second time participating in the short course and I am very happy to be able to deliver my best."

With his team mates, Dhuha delivered a gold and a silver in the relay events.

Meanwhile, Sharizan Shazali, also did the team proud by smashing 2 meet records in 50m backstroke and 100m IM. In his favourite sprint 50m backstroke, Sharizan flipped a new meet record of 27.60 erasing a 4 year old record of 27.99. In the 100m IM, he swam to 59.86 to rewrite the old time of 1:01.04s.

He clinched 4 individual gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze.

Sharizan (centre) sharing his joy with friends as the 1st runner-up for Group 2 boys

Whisky Chew was also named the 1st runner up for the Group 3 boys as he garnered 2 gold and 3 bronze in his individual events.

The relay teams also did fairly well with Group 1, 2 and 4 boys breaking the 4x25m medley relay as they sprinted to refresh the old times.

Another commendable swimmer is Muhd Farhan Andi who secured 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze in his individual events.

Below are the medalists and point earners for IBSC.

We congratulate all medalists and sprinters who managed to improve their multiple turnings at the short pool to faster times.

Fruition of great results come from the great dedication of team coaches without their guidance the swimmers would not have performed so well. Thanks especially to Coach Shazali and Coach Kamal for guiding the team.

The Team Manager, En. Hazrulhisyam and Assistant Team Manager, En. Zulkifry have both done their job well too in looking after the team. The massive support from parents volunteers and support team also count in making a successful swim outing for the team.

Bravo to all!

As for individual event, our group 2 boys proved that they are among the best in the arena.

Muhd Andi managed to amass 4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. A challenger in mostly difficult events, Andi was at top form in 100m freestyle (56.05), 200m IM (2:21.63), 200m freestyle (2:02.71) and 100m butterfly 1:00.57) to win the 4 gold.

Sharizan Shazali, known to be great backstroker, claimed 2 gold in his pet events. He was catching up pretty steadily in his breaststroke as he sliced off considerable time to a new PB of 1:11.86 in 100m breaststroke to win the silver and 32.57 in 50m breaststroke to snatch the bronze.

Comrade, Yap Min Shun also do not want to be left out as he won 1 gold and 1 bronze in his freestyle events.

Yap Min Shun, shaved times to 2 new PBs in Junior Splash Leg 2 and was happy to have won 1 gold in 50m freestyle (25.84) and a bronze in 100m freestyle (56.70)

Harry Chong, also did considerably well in his favourite breaststroke events by coming in 2nd placing in 50m breaststroke (32.53)and 3rd placing in 100m breaststroke (1:11.88).

A newbie in the junior squad worthy of mention is Riverling Choo who returned from Peru last year and joined IBSC. She proved her mini but solid strength as she swam swiftly to 1 silver and 1 bronze in the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle respectively to create new PBs for herself.

The other medalists were Dylan Wong, Nur Ariessa, Tan Goh Jun Roy and Low Wenxi. Congratulations to all medal winners and swimmers with new PBs.
