KUALA LUMPUR: Sebastian Soon finally got his revenge in the pool.

The 17-year-old reclaimed the national 400m individual medley record in 4:28.34 en route to the gold medal at the Malaysian Open swimming championships at the National Aquatic Centre here yesterday.

He shaved more than two seconds of the previous time of 4:30.48 set by Tia’a Faang Der at the Sukma in Ipoh last year.

Terengganu’s Arvin Shaun Singh clocked 4:30.47 for the silver while Faang Der settled for the bronze (4:33.63).

It was indeed sweet revenge for Sebastian as he lost to Faang Der at the Sukma.

“A few months before Sukma I broke the record with 4:30.85 at the Asean Schools Games and everybody had high hopes on me to better my time,” said Sebastian.

“And I was also eyeing a gold or two but Faang Der spoilt my party. Not only he won the gold, he also set a new record. So this win is kind of satisfying.

“I was also pretty nervous because in the afternoon everyone was doing good times.

“The record was a bonus as I wasn’t expecting it. I was only aiming for the gold and beat Arvin because he has been improving lately.”

Sebastian will now take part in the 1,500m today where he will be up against hot favourite Welson Sim.

Welson came close to breaking his own 200m freestyle record when he clocked 1:47.48 just shy of the previous time of 1:47.36.

“Although my time is a bit off, I know I can go faster than that,” said Welson.

“During the race, I was feeling exhausted and I was like dragging my legs. It’s like my legs had no more battery.”

Nonetheless it was enough for him to secure his third gold medal after he won the 400m and 100m freestyles earlier.

He smashed the 100m record with a time of 49.54 on Friday.

Chelsea Lee won 1st Open Water Swimming Championship 2019 at Putrajaya Lake

IBSC swimmer, Chelsea Lee Ning, 14, made a first trial to test the 1st Open Water Swimming  Championship 2019 last weekend on 21 April, 2019 at Putrajaya Lake and much to the delight of proud parents, she managed to walk out of the water first championing the female category with a swim of 1 hour 18 mins  surpassing other more experience female swimmers senior than her.

Chelsea recounted, "I was a bit nervous at the start because open water swimming is new to me. When I jumped into the water I told myself to be myself and I stayed calm."

"The water was dirty and murky, so I couldn’t see a thing. I felt like the water in the lake was actually hard to feel and pull. But after a while, I got use to it and it was easier to swim. By staying calm and focus I just swam my best." 

" I could have done a better time if not for the mistakes I made at the start as I went off trail, it was really new to me and I couldn’t really identify the check points.  But as I caught up with the last batches of boys in front of me, they became my check points then and I just tried my best to swim past them."

Congratulations to Chelsea, and we hope she will be a prominent open water swimmer one day.

Meanwhile, the male category was won by former national swimmer, Kevin Yeap who is now a coach in Perak.

Kevin Yeap, the male winner of the 5km open swimming, is a source of inspiration to Chelsea too.

Nur Iman Nabilah celebrating her win with fellow winners in the Open Female category

Another IBSC swimmer, Nur Iman Nabilah (aka. Bella) swam the Open category and is a seasoned swimmer in open water. Her last minute entry prompted by Coach Shazali yielded a silver for her as she came second with a time of 1 hour 21 mins, behind Irene Chong.

Winners of 14-19 years boys, where Muhd Rayyan came third 

In the 5km Half-Marathon event, Muhd Rayyan, came third in the age group of 14-19 years with a time of 1 hour 28 mins.

On the same day of the 1st Open Water Championship, a Putrajaya Swimfest 2019 was concurrently held too at the same lake.

IBSC swimmer, Awwal Zasfika, swam the 380m kids event and came 2nd in the Sea Angel category for 10-11 years girls.

IBSC topped the table in 2019 SportExcel Leg1 with 14 gold

A big shout out to team IBSC! We have done it again being top of the table winning 14 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze at the SportExcel Leg1 in Shah Alam on 13-14 April, 2019.

We couldn't have done it without the spectacular performances of our IBSC champions, namely Ng Zi Syuen and Muhd Dhuha who both have scooped the most points in the junior circuit.

An unassuming Dhuha, always managed to pull golden surprises in his race. Dhuha swept clean 8 solid gold in the 1st Leg.

Congratulations to all medalists and again new motivation is boosted for swimmers who have achieved new PBs. Keep up the good job, both swimmers and coaches!

Big thanks to the working committee, Vincent Chin, Mr. Ho, May, Yen Ling, and parents Amelia and Lisa who helped out during the 2 days meet.

The first leg is now completed and we hope more will participate in the away meet of Leg 2 in Ipoh soon, as IBSC will be rewarding swimmers with incentives for their points accumulated from both Legs.

Cheras Pool Closure and Relocation of Training Venues

We regret to inform that Cheras pool is now closed for maintenance by DBKL effective 2 April, 2019 for an estimated period of 4 to 6 weeks.

The pre-competitive and development squads are now relocated to 3 venues as follows :

c) UNITEN pool in Kajang
