Star Online : Decline in sports performances worrying: Khairy
BY AFTAR SINGH
PUTRAJAYA: Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin is not a happy man.
The Malaysian contingent surpassed their 40-gold target at the Myanmar SEA Games in December, but there is no denying the decline in the standard of various sports.
“Although we surpassed the 40-gold medal target (by winning 43 golds), we finished fifth overall among 11 countries,” said Khairy after a post-mortem meeting attended by the National Sports Council (NSC) and Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) on Thursday.
“I am greatly concerned about the decline in sports that we used to dominate in the SEA Games.
“We used to win golds in athletics, swimming, badminton and sepaktakraw. But today, we are struggling to win medals in these sports.
“We need strategic intervention to help improve the standard of these sports for the 2017 SEA Games, which we will be hosting.”
He pointed out that even Vietnam did better than Malaysia in swimming, which had 32 gold medals up for grabs. Vietnam bagged five golds while Malaysia only managed to win four.
“ASUM (Amateur Swimming Association of Malaysia) are banking on the same old swimmers like Daniel Bego, Khoo Cai Lin and Christina Loh to win the medals,” said Khairy.
“We need to look for a calibre foreign coach to help improve the standard of the swimmers.”
He also took athletics to task, saying that although the back-up athletes did well to improve their personal best to win medals, they are still lagging behind neighbours Thailand.
“MAF (Malaysian Athletic Federation) need to hire a good technical director who can help local coaches produce better athletes,” he said.
“I’m also worried about the standard of badminton as the shuttlers struggled to do well at the SEA Games.”
As for sepaktakraw, Khairy believes that it needs a total revamp and that the association should work closely with the NSC to improve their fortunes.
He also questioned fringe sports that have not been delivering medals for many years.
“There are some sports like volleyball, table tennis, waterpolo and women’s football that have not done well for the last 15 years. The time has come for them to start cracking and find ways to improve their standard,” he said.

IBSC Conquered the Pool to Emerge Champs Again!
This year's President Cup 2014 held for the 33rd time saw the highest turnout for IBSC swimmers as we registered 131 swimmers in the annual national inter-club swimming championship, making us the club with the top participants. There were a total of 1,036 registered swimmers from 42 clubs all over Malaysia.
What's encouraging for IBSC was the increased participation of Group IV swimmers who were all excited and eager to take on the challenging swim even though there were qualifying times imposed. To some it was their first experience in President Cup.
Team IBSC |
In the meet, Team IBSC led with massive margin topping with 1219.5 points, followed by PADE Supersharkz in second place with 663 points and the third place was grabbed by Kelab Renang MSSC with 408.5 points. IBSC easily retained the President Cup trophy again!
If not for the fantastic achievements of the following swimmers, IBSC wouldn't have accumulated so much points. Every swimmer tried their very best to gain points for the club. Congrats to all for their splendid performances and improved PBs.
Erika Kong returned to swim for IBSC in the Women Open and she broke the meet record in 100m breast with new time of 1:13.36, previously held by compatriot Christina Loh (2011, 1:13.43). In the 50m breast, she again repeated the record breaking by erasing Christina's time (2010, 33.99) with a better time of 33.85.

Tern Jian Han also did the same ritual as Erika by breaking 2 backstoke records belonging to Ian James Barr and refreshing the 50m back time to 26.74 (2010, 27.72) and 200m back of 57.61 (2010, 1:01.86).

The 3-day meet was rather exhausting in a way as some have to wait long for their swim events. The boredom on day 1, Friday, was soon broken on Saturday morning, as ARENA has an Elite Team autograph signing sessions involving some national athletes for their swim fans. Some representing the Elite Team and swimming under IBSC were Ian James Barr, Vernon Lee and Erika Kong.
Team Manager, Ken, was totally committed in his duties, ensuring the juniors turn up for marshaling and the chaperons were also hard at work managing and distributing meals to the swimmers. Great job to the working committee.
Team Manager, Ken Liew, checking the event for Zhen Yi. |
It was also the first time IBSC's committee took the opportunity to raise some funds during a meet by selling the AquaSwim hair products and helping the meet organiser with the redemption of free shampoo. The redemption has attracted a long queue first thing in the morning on day 1, and the free samples were snapped up within an hour.
We couldn't thank the coaches enough for guiding the swimmers in the competition. The support of the parents were humongous and the unity of the team work amongst all of us was top-notched.
Thanks to all coaches, swimmers, parents and volunteers for yet another successful swim meet. Also our appreciation goes to our partner for President Cup, Trend Master Sdn Bhd for partnering us in providing the competition kit to our swimmers.

New Swim Apps on iPhone - SwimSync
SwimSync is free for download into your iPhone |
Hi there,
Parents and swimmers may wish to know that there's a new iPhone app called 'swimsync' developed very recently in Australia which can be used for storing your swim results. Here, we're not talking about one swimmer's results but you can record PBs of multiple swimmers, either that of your own club members, your few swimming children, peers or even your competitors for comparison! There's no limit on the number of swimmers you can key in.
Swimsync enables users to store swim times, graph results, save times directly from the in-built stopwatch and see all statistics from each swim including lap splits. Swimmers will be able to track their progress and enjoy watching their times improve. They can even view all their personal best times in one screen - no more searching for where and when the times were swum!
Swimsync saves all swim times from pool or open water races. You can chart swimmers’ progress, instantly view all personal best times, set goals, compare swimmers and organize swim meets.
Download for free now on your iPhone at https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/swimsync/id936533489?mt=8
There is also a ad-free version available for download for only US$0.99 at the moment.
See http://www.swimsync.com.au/
So, down wait. Try it out!
Best Regards,

Star Community : Comeback kid makes big splash
BY DASHEER NOH
TWENTY-FOUR records were re-written at the 11th Kedah International Invitational Swimming Championships held at the Gunung Keriang Aquatic Centre near Alor Setar.
The number of records created, however, fell short of last year’s total of 31 although the number of participants this year outnumbered the previous year’s figure.
A total of 509 participants from 21 teams including 16 swimmers from Madras, India, took part in the championships this time whereas there were 430 participants from 15 teams including a team from Madras, last year.
Clement David Leong, 26, from Perak, who had laid off competitive swimming for about two years, made a successful comeback to bag four gold medals at the meet which was held over two days recently.
He was the oldest swimmer to win four events at the meet, including record-breaking performances in the 50m backstroke and 100m breaststroke categories.
He clocked a new time of 28.60s in the 50m backstroke to erase the old record of 28.96s by Dickson Chin from Penang Sports Club last year, and 1:07.72s in the 100m breaststroke to erase the 100m breaststroke record of 1:09.36s held by Athijade Moravan (Barracuda Aquatic Club Alor Setar) since 2011.
He also won gold medals in the 50m butterfly and the 50m freestyle. He also anchored the Perak team to win a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay.
The Madras Swimming Club, who had won six gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals last year, failed to ignite and went home without a gold medal this time.
The event was organised by the Kedah Amateur Swimming Association.
Organising secretary K. Ravindran rated this year’s event as the best ever since the inaugural meet 10 years ago.
“The huge response from teams who come from as far as Madras, Johor, Malacca, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negri Sembilan made the meet a memorable one apart from regular participants from Perak, Penang and Kedah,” he said.
There were five age groups including two open categories for both boys and girls.
Penang Sports Club topped the leaderboard by winning 29 gold, 16 silver and 10 bronze medals while Ikan Bilis Swimming Club from Kuala Lumpur took second place with 21 gold, nine silver and 16 bronze medals.
The others finished in the following order: Bukit Banang GC Johor 10-14-13, Penang Chinese Swimming Club 10-10-11, Kelab Renang MSSC 7-15-8, Perak Amateur Swimming Association 7-10-10, Royal Selangor GC 4-1-7, Pirates Swimming Club 2-6-2, Rakan Akuatik Remaja Malacca 2-1-4, Pusat Akuatik Darul Ehsan 1-6-4, Trident Swimming Club 1-5-7, Madras Swimming Club 0-7-4, Sungai Petani Aquatic Club 0-1-0, Kinta Swimming Club 0-0-2 and Kingfisher Swimming club 0-0-1.

Midget team made an impressive outing to Gunung Keriang, Kedah
IBSC had never sent any swim team to the Kedah International Swimming Meet even though in the past, few individual swimmers have participated in the meet under their school banners.
This year in 2014, we were pleasantly surprised with the encouraging response from 20 swimmers and decided to form a team under IBSC. Out of the total of 20 swimmers, 6 were very young beginners while the rest have some fair bit of swim experience. Some key swimmers were expected to deliver some medals to the club.
As the team is small, no coaches accompanied the squad. Instead 2 senior swimmers, Desmond Ng and Yap Li Wen, were appointed as swim captains to lead the warm-up sessions and guide the boys and girls accordingly. This provided an opportunity to groom these seniors as leaders as well as to impart some responsibilities to them during the swim meet.
Some of the swimmers flew up North with their parents while others prefer to drive to enjoy the greeneries. The self-driving gave the family the opportunity to treat the outing as a holiday cum swim meet trip. Along the way, they also had the opportunity to savour breakfast and lunches at popular stops before arriving at the destination.
We arrived at Fuller Hotel, Alor Star on the eve of competition at various hours from afternoon till late at night. Dinner arrangement was on our own as arrival time was uncertain and the availability of numerous eateries near the hotel vicinity. The group was small and fragmented, hence we made our own arrangement for breakfast the next day. Most had Dim Sum which was a good 2 minutes walk, thereafter we made our way to the pool at 6.45am.
The Gunung Keriang Aquatic is unique as the venue has no address and it is located next to Guning Keriang surrounded by paddy fields. The famous landmarks within its vicinity are the Gunung Keriang and Paddy Museum. The journey from the hotel takes about 20 minutes but it can take much longer if you make a wrong turn!!!!
This year’s meet in Kedah attracted 21 swim teams with a record of 509 swimmers. The meet was organised by the Persatuan Amatur Renang Kedah on 1-2 November, 2014. Most of the famous Penang swim clubs participated together with other clubs from Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, Johor as well as one foreign team from India (Madras Swimming Team).
On day 1, we had a decent start when Anson Chew delivered a bronze in the opening event of 200m Open Boys Freestyle and followed with string of medals scooped by Li Wen, Yi Xuan, Zachary, Zhen Yi, Ken Ji and Desmond. Penang Swimming Club was always matching us in the medal haul and by the end of day 1 led all the other teams with their stronger contingent.
We had a promising start on the 2nd day with 4 gold medals (Desmond, Li Wen, Zhen Yi and Ken Ji) out of the first 5 events. By end of 2nd day, we managed to collect 13 gold summing up a total of 21 gold, 9 silver and 16 bronze for the Kedah outing. IBSC swimmers renewed some meet records and they were broken by Desmond (50m & 200m breast) and Zhen Yi (100m free & fly). Overall it is a splendid achievement by IBSC with only a midget team.
Penang Swimming Club with a total of 46 of their top swimmers emerged as the overall champion followed by IBSC and Chinese Swimming Club.
See Full Results here.
The support and cooperation rendered by parents were simply superb. Appreciation goes to parents who chipped into buying breakfast, snacks, bananas and assisting whatever way they could during this away meet.
Thank you for the support and congrats to the swimmers. We may return with a more significant contingent in 2015.

Vincent Low, Team Manager

IBSC swimmers renewed some meet records and they were broken by Desmond (50m & 200m breast) and Zhen Yi (100m free & fly). Overall it is a splendid achievement by IBSC with only a midget team.

The support and cooperation rendered by parents were simply superb. Appreciation goes to parents who chipped into buying breakfast, snacks, bananas and assisting whatever way they could during this away meet.
Thank you for the support and congrats to the swimmers. We may return with a more significant contingent in 2015.

Yeong Zhen Yi, a promising athlete in the making
Yeong Zhen Yi is set to be a strong iron girl in the future as she has been championing many swimming and triathlon races since last year at a tender age of 9.
IBSC is fortunate to have Zhen Yi contributing top points to the club. So far, she has been the Overall Best Girl not only in swimming but also in her running and tri competitions. You will be amazed to see her list of achievements.
Zhen Yi, lanky for her age, joined IBSC mid of 2012 and has been training under Coach Zoe for merely 3 months before she was hand-picked by PRAKL former coach, Coach He Tinglan to train under the KL Junior Squad. Under her tutelage, she picked up her swimming skill pretty fast and quickly collected a bronze in 100m breaststroke in 2013 PRAKL Age Group Swimming Championship.
Even though winning many open water races, Zhen Yi has eerie feelings on the possibility of being beaten by jelly fish. So she prefers swimming in the calm pool instead.
Recently, Zhen Yi also received an Excellence Award in Aquatic awarded by the Education Department in the District of Hulu Langat.
Yi-Yi, as fondly called by her father, loves savouring spaghetti and she adores singing during her free time. Her favourite singer is Taylor Swift. A promising athlete, Zhen Yi hopes to be able to excel further to participate in Olympic swimming one day.
IBSC wishes her all the best!

The Star : National swimming body hail timely financial injection
BY TAN MING WAI
PETALING JAYA: The Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) has hailed the timely inclusion of swimming as one of the six core sports to be improved urgently under new national budget announcement.
Its secretary-general Edwin Chong revealed that the standard of our national swimmers have declined so severely that Malaysia is even in danger of not winning a single gold when the country hosts the 2017 SEA Games.
But now, he believes that by having enough resources, it will be able to revive Malaysian swimming’s glory days - just as how they enjoyed in the 90s.
“I would really like to thank the minister for including swimming as one of the six sports in the first phase, it’s just timely” said Edwin.
“We have sat down for long meetings with YB Khairy (Jamaluddin) during the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Incheon Asian Games recently, and he has assured us financial backing is on the way.
“Asum is really in dire need of financial assistance. The decline of our swimmers have also resulted in less allocation, hence there is nothing much we can do about.
“We were once a dominant force in South East Asia in the 90s, then we have a huge pool of great swimmers such as Lim Keng Liat, Elvin Chia, Anthony Ang, Allen Ong and Siow Yi Ting.
“There was at least a reliable specialist in each of the discipline. We have Keng Liat for backstroke, Elvin for breaststroke, ‘butterfly king’ Anthony and Allen as our freestyle specialist.
“But now, we struggle even in the SEA region itself. If the situation doesn’t improve, I’m afraid we won’t be able to challenge for even one gold from a total of 38 contested in 2017 SEA Games. That’s how bad it is.”
Edwin has also stressed on the importance of continuing sending our swimmers to study and train in the United States, as well as roping more foreign coaches to be placed in all the states.
“With enough funding, we may be able to send our swimmers to the States again just like those days,” explained Edwin.
“Singapore is actually doing what we have done in the past, and now they are able to groom a world class swimmer in Joseph Schooling who won the gold (in 100m butterfly) in Incheon recently.
“Didn’t we once had Keng Liat, who trains in the States, as the Asian Games gold medallist too when he won (100m backstroke) in 1998 Bangkok. Elvin and Yi Ting were among those who also trained in US.
“We will also need to bring in more foreign coaches and place them in the states to oversee the swimming programme and identify talents there. Singapore currently have a strength of 10 foreign experts in its coaching staff.
“We need the states to be the national squad feeder, unlike the present where all are concentrated only in national centralised training.
“It’s not that the states do not have their development programme at the moment, but their goals are just for the sake of Sukma, and nothing beyond that.”
