Holiday Learn to Swim Clinic 2017

In collaboration with Persatuan Renang Amatur Kuala Lumpur, IBSC has conducted a holiday Learn to Swim Clinic on 5th - 8th Dec and 12th - 15th December, 2017 at Kompleks Renang Kuala Lumpur for the benefits of kids who wanted to acquire the life skill of swimming.

The program was supported by Nestle Products (M) Sdn Bhd and the kids were just too happy to be able to consume MILO drinks daily during the swimming sessions. We would also like to thank MILO for the handout goodies of drawstring/shoe bags and T-shirts to the participants.

Coaches were assisted by IBSC senior swimmers who also gained hands-on experience in handling kids and helping them to gain water confidence. The swimmers ranging from as young as 4 years to 12 years have thoroughly enjoyed the lessons. Many have pledged to continue the swimming program and IBSC is glad to be able to introduce swimming to them as a preferred sport.

For further enquiry of classes, please email ibsc.swimmers@gmail.com

Congratulations to all medalists.

The Star : Welson and Co break national short course records in Beijing

PETALING JAYA: Welson Sim (pic) enjoyed the satisfaction of breaking Daniel Bego’s short course (25m) national records for both the men’s 200m and 400m freestyle at the FINA Swimming World Cup meet in Beijing, China.

The 20-year-old KL SEA Games double gold medallist just missed out on making the 400m freestyle final finishing ninth in the preliminaries in 3:48.93 yesterday.

Australian Jacob Ross Hansford got the last ticket for the top-eight final after clocking 3:48.87.

However, Welson’s time bettered Daniel’s previous national mark of 3:50.87 set at the World Cup meet in Singapore in 2013.

He was ranked 17th in the 200m freestyle after clocking 1:48.25 on Friday to improve on Daniel’s previous national mark of 1:49.21 set at the World Cup meet in Singapore in 2013.

“I already hold the long course (50m) national records for 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle, so I’m happy to have the records for the short course events as well.

“It’s a good experience racing in the short course as the turns and pacing are different,” said Welson.

Keith Lim also set a new short course national record in men’s 50m freestyle.

He clocked 22.55 for 21st overall placing to improve on the previous national mark of 23.15 held by Lim Ching Hwang since 2013.

Tern Jian Han set a new national record of 53.70 en route to finishing 14th in the men’s 100m butterfly, erasing Tan Gin Yu’s previous mark of 57.49 set in 2013.

Chan Jie also dipped under Gin Yu’s national mark by posting 54.43 to finish 16th in the preliminaries.

Jian Han was ranked 13th in the men’s 50m backstroke (24.71) and 19th in the 200m backstroke distance (2:02.32).

Caroline Chan was 24th in the women’s 50m (29.18) and 100m (1:04.91) backstroke events.

By Fadhil Yunus

VIETNAM is currently leading the race in the overall medal standings following the completion of day one of the 41st Southeast Asian Age Groups Swimming Championships at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex Swimming Pool yesterday.

The defending champion is leading the race with a commendable haul of 15 gold, 12 silver and three bronze ahead of Indonesia which is a distant second with nine gold, seven silver and four bronze while Thailand sat in third place with four gold, eight silver and 12 bronze. Vietnam created further distance in the race for overall champion after winning both of the freestyle relays in the boys’ and girls’ events which marked the conclusion of day one.

Vietnam’s Huu Kim Son Nguyen sets a new SEA Age Group record after clocking a time of 2:06.47s, surpassing a five-year record of 2:06.50s previously set by his compatriot Tran Duy Khoi in June 2012.

Indonesia’s Adinda Larasati Dewi equalled the championship record in the Girls 16-18 100m butterfly previously set by Thailand’s Sapianchai Kornkarnjana with a time of 1:01.94 in December 2015.

Vietnam accomplished 39 gold medals during the previous edition in Bangkok two years ago and team manager Dinh Viet Hung will be looking to get one better or more.

Dinh was pleased to win both relay events and identified Singapore as a strong team in the relay events.

“I saw the Singapore team and they sent a very young team. And there were new faces,” said Dinh in an interview with the Weekend Bulletin.

“Tomorrow I hope that the team will continue their good lead. We attained 39 gold in Bangkok and we try to aim for 40 in this championships,” continued the team manager.

He also added that three or four swimmers from the team are capable to meet the qualifying mark which is eligible in the tournament, for the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina next year.

A total of 27 swimmers have been selected for the team including 15 male and 12 male with Dinh adding that the youngest member from the Vietnamese team is aged 13 years.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s Robert Martin was pleased with his win in the boys 16-18 50m freestyle despite not setting his fastest time in his first international competition in Brunei.

“I really enjoyed it. The facilities here are very good. The people here are very nice,” said the 16-year old.

“I’m okay with my time. It’s not my personal best time but it’s okay,” continued Robert in his only race.

A total of 235 swimmers and nine countries are vying for top honours in the three-day meet.
