KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Bernama) -- National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong is confident Malaysia Games (Sukma) hosts Perlis will not have any problems ensuring the swimming pool for the Games is completed on schedule.
"I am in constant contact with Perlis Menteri Besar Azlan Man to get the latest development on the Perlis Sukma, and he has assured that everything is going well and it will be completed according to plan. Do not make early conclusions, we are guided by professionals (architects, the Public Works Department and consultants).
"They are confident the swimming pool will be ready as planned. We do not want to dampen the spirits of the athletes who have been training for the Sukma," he told reporters after opening the NSC Director-General's Air Gun Cup Shooting Championship at the Gymnasium III Shooting Range, Bukit Jalil here today.
The Perlis Sukma is due to be held from May 24 until June 4.
Malaysian Amateur Swimming Union (ASUM) secretary, Edwin Chong had been quoted in the local media as saying that he was worried that the swimming complex would not meet ASUM's standards if it was constructed hurriedly.
At the ceremony today, Zolkples also handed over two air rifles to national shooting athletes Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi and Muslifah Zulkifli as well as an air pistol to Joseline Cheah, who have been selected to participate in the Road to Rio programme.
Zolkples said the selection of the athletes for the Rio programme was also open to other athletes who display consistent performance in all the international championships they take part in.
Twenty-eight athletes from 11 teams are taking in the NSC DG Air Gun Cup Shooting Championship.
Four categories are being contested - 10-metre Air Rifle men and women, and the 10- metre Air Pistol men and women.
