The Star : Diving may be moved to Alor Setar

THE Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum) have given the Perlis Malaysia Games (Sukma) organisers one last chance to complete the State Aquatic centre before the event begins on Tuesday.

Otherwise, the diving events will be moved to the Gunung Keriang Aquatics Complex in Alor Setar, Kedah.

Asum adviser Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim and secretary Edwin Chong inspected the aquatic centre yesterday and they were clearly unhappy with the situation.

The anti-slip mats on the platforms do not meet the technical requirement, the lighting at the aquatic centre is insufficient and water quality at both the diving and swimming pools is below par.

Shahidan said that they would try to install the Gunung Keriang Aquatics Complex’s diving platform’s anti-slip mats at the State Aquatic centre first.

If that cannot be done, the diving events will be shifted to Gunung Keriang.

“The safety of the athletes is my biggest concern ... The anti-slip mats installed here are common ones used in bathrooms and not safe to be used on a diving platform,” said Shahidan.

“The other defects can be fixed in time but not the anti-slip mats ... we have informed the organisers which brand of mats should be installed.

“We want all the aquatic events to be held in Perlis ... but if it cannot be done, we’ll move the diving event to Alor Setar. We’ve given the organisers one more day to sort out the platforms.”
