THE future looks bleak for swimming in Malaysia as none of the upcoming swimmers in the National Age Group Championships, which ended today, managed to impress national coach Paul Birmingham.
“There were several solid swimmers but none stood out. It is also worrying that no locals managed to break a meet record in the championships,” said Birmingham at the Darul Ehsan Aquatics Centre in Shah Alam today.
“It is disappointing that not many swimmers are coming through the youth system in Malaysia. The states must do more to produce quality swimmers.
“Currently the gap between the national swimmers and the others is huge. Things must improve.”
Meanwhile, Olympic-bound Welson Sim captured the 200m and 1,500 freestyle titles today to end his campaign in the meet with four gold medals.
On the performance of the national swimmers, Birmingham said he is happy with them. “My swimmers met their targets.
They were only pacing themselves in the meet as they are preparing for the Malaysian Open in May,” Birmingham added.
Hong Kong were crowned the overall champions with a haul of 66 gold, 37 silver and 23 bronze, followed by Selangor (32-41-46) and Kuala Lumpur (20-28-24).
