Fruitful golden haul for Team IBSC at SportExcel Leg 1 in Melaka

IBSC swimmers who registered to participate in the SportExcel Leg 1 in Melaka did not sum up to an impressive numbers this year, partly because many are in feverish exam mood and gave the race a miss. Only 55 IBSC swimmers swam in the meet at Stadium Akuatik Hang Jebat. The Leg 1, organised by the Malacca Amateur Swimming Association (MASA) attracted some 763 swimmers all over Malaysia.

However, we did our best to compile as much points as possible and it was indeed a blessing that our swimmers managed to top the chart in the medal tally by garnering 11 gold, 8 silver and 13 bronze. Pade Supersharks who collected the most points had 9 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze, followed by Kelab Renang MSSC with 5 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze.

Final medal tally achieved by all clubs during SportExcel Leg 1, with IBSC leading with 11 gold

Great performances came from many swimmers (refer to table below) especially Law Li Wei who swept all tri-coloured medals in all the 8 events she participated. With a series of glorious swim, Li Wei grabbed 5 gold, 2 silver  and a bronze.

Even though Li Wei just competed in the Malaysia National Age Group only a fortnight ago, she continued to trim her times in most of her events. With her excellent achievement, Li Wei is IBSC top points earner with 188 points collected. Well done Li Wei!

The second best swimmer is non other than freestylist, Iqmal Muqhis, who scooped 2 gold in the 50m & 100m freestyle, 1 silver in 50m fly and 2 bronze in 50m & 100m breaststroke.

Meanwhile, Ng Kai Wen accumulated 2nd top notch with 152.5 points at hand and he did a surprising finish by touching the wall first in his 50m backstroke event. Excellent job!

IBSC medalists and point earners in Leg 1

Well done to all the medalists and top points achievers. Most swimmers feel jubilant with their renewed PBs once again and are eager to repeat their awesome performance in Leg 2 next month in Shah Alam.

Top 24 swimmers who collect the most points for each event both in Leg 1 (Melaka) and Leg 2 (Shah Alam) will be able to advance to the Grand Final at Kompleks Renang Kuala Lumpur, Bandar Tun Razak on 13-14 August, 2016.

The outing was a great success led by Coach Kamarudin, Coach Daniel and Mr Vincent Low as the dedicated Team Manager.  Mrs Tanya Low and Mrs Shirley Kuan were the responsible chaperons looking after the kids. Many supporting parents were sporting too contributing their instant photos, team progress and results posting on the Whats App channels to update others.

IBSC would also like to thank En. Akmal Syarifudfin from USPTN, Majlis Sukan Wilayah Persekutuan for taking his valuable time to accompany the swimmers to Melaka to gain an insight into the competition proper by the development squad.

THANK YOU ALL!

The Star : No Sukma for Olympic swimmers, says coach

BY LIM TEIK HUAT

SHAH ALAM: Swimmers who have qualified for the Olympics will have to forget about competing in the Sukma (Malaysia Games) in Kuching.

National coach Paul Birmingham Thomas is putting his foot down on their participation.

Sarawak will host Sukma from July 22-31 while the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro is from Aug 5-21.

“The states have got to put the country’s interest first before anything else. It’s wrong if we allow the Olympic-bound swimmers to swim in the Sukma.

“The two competitions are held too closely to each other. The swimmers need to acclimatise to the 12-hour time zone, so it's crazy if you expect them to swim well in the Olympics. We should know the swimmers confirmed for the Olympics before the Sukma. They will be barred from competing in Kuching,” said Thomas.

“Our plan is to bring those going to the Olympics to the training camp in Florida (the United States) sometime in July. We will set base there and go straight to Rio to cut down on the travel time,” he added.

As the hosts, Sarawak are keen to have the services of Welson Sim despite the fact that he is restricted to compete in two individual and three relay events due to his status as a SEA Games gold medallist.

Welson has already qualified for the Olympics under the A time for the men’s 200m and 400m freestyle after clocking 1:47.67 and 3:50.33 at the Singapore national age-group championships last month.

Malaysia also have swimmers who made the B cut but they will only know their fate on July 11.

The swimmers who made the B cut are Kevin Yeap (400m freestyle), Yeap Zheng Yang (200m freestyle), Daniel Bego (400m freestyle) and Wong Fu Kang (100m breaststroke) for men; Chui Lai Kwan (50m freestyle), Khoo Cai Lin (400m freestyle) and Phee Jinq En (100m breaststroke) for women.

In another development, Thomas expressed his disappointment that no local swimmers managed to set meet records at the National Age-Group Championships which ended at the Shah Alam Aquatic Centre on Sunday.

“A lot needs to be done where the states are concerned. It should be about highlighting the swimmers but

I did not see any solid swim. We can do with a bit more depth, otherwise we are always going to rely on the few talented kids we have,” said Thomas.

The NST : National coach disappointed with performances of youth swimmers

BY AJITPAL SINGH - 3 APRIL 2016 @ 9:30 PM

THE future looks bleak for swimming in Malaysia as none of the upcoming swimmers in the National Age Group Championships, which ended today, managed to impress national coach Paul Birmingham.

“There were several solid swimmers but none stood out. It is also worrying that no locals managed to break a meet record in the championships,” said Birmingham at the Darul Ehsan Aquatics Centre in Shah Alam today.

“It is disappointing that not many swimmers are coming through the youth system in Malaysia. The states must do more to produce quality swimmers.

“Currently the gap between the national swimmers and the others is huge. Things must improve.”

Meanwhile, Olympic-bound Welson Sim captured the 200m and 1,500 freestyle titles today to end his campaign in the meet with four gold medals.

On the performance of the national swimmers, Birmingham said he is happy with them. “My swimmers met their targets.

They were only pacing themselves in the meet as they are preparing for the Malaysian Open in May,” Birmingham added.

Hong Kong were crowned the overall champions with a haul of 66 gold, 37 silver and 23 bronze, followed by Selangor (32-41-46) and Kuala Lumpur (20-28-24).

The Star : Welson skips home Sukma, focus on training for Rio Olympics

BY LIM TEIK HUAT

SHAH ALAM: Sorry, Sarawak. Swimmer Welson Sim is letting go of the chance to compete in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) at his home state from July 22-31 as he wants to be focused on making a sensational debut at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

The 18-year-old will compete in three back-to-back meets – in Cannes (France), Monte Carlo (Monaco) and Barcelona (Spain) – in June before heading to Florida, the United States with coach Paul Birmingham for training right until the Olympics in August.

“Florida will be my training base for the Olympics as it’s the same time zone and with a similar climate.

“Most of the swimmers preparing for the Olympics are doing the same thing as it’s easier to adjust to the conditions in Rio.

“I have qualified on merit for the Olympics and I will use the races in Europe to keep myself in good shape,” said Welson, who is targeting to reach the top 16 (semi-finals) in Rio.

Alex Lim Keng Liat is the only Malaysian swimmer to have made the top-16 at the Olympics – in the men’s 100m backstroke in Athens in 2004 – and Welson has high hopes to follow in the Sabahan’s footsteps after reaching the A qualifying times for the men’s 200m and the 400m freestyle at the Singapore national age-group meet last month.

As for the Sukma, Welson’s status as the Singapore SEA Games gold medallist in the men’s 400m freestyle restricts him to only two individual events.

Welson would be a shoo-in to deliver the men’s 200m and 400m freestyle gold medals for Sarawak, but he is passing up the chance.

“I’m sure my state wants me to swim as they’re hosting the Sukma, but they also understand that I have to focus on the Olympics,” said Welson, who missed out on a third gold after Sarawak were disqualified in the 4x100m medley relay boys’ Open category at the National Age-Group Championships at Shah Alam Aquatic Centre on Saturday.

Welson will be looking to add to his gold medal tally when he races in the 200m and 1500m freestyle events on Sunday.

He had claimed victory in the 100m and 400m freestyle events earlier.

The NST : Welson Sim eyes national record in the Malaysian Invitational Age Group Championships

BY AJITPAL SINGH - 2 APRIL 2016 @ 9:57 PM

SHAH ALAM: Olympic-bound Welson Sim has his sights set on breaking his own national record when he competes in the boys’ open 200m freestyle event at the Malaysian Invitational Age Group Swimming Championships at Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre tomorrow.

The 18-year-old’s national record of 1:47.67 set in the recent Singapore Age Group Championships is the 15th fastest in the world so far.

Welson will compete in the 200m and 400m freestyle disciplines at the Rio Olympic Games in August.

The swimmer is also the national record holder in the 400m freestyle with a time of 3:50.33.

“The meet is not a focus event for me but I will try my best to make an impression. I will also compete in the 1,500 freestyle race tomorrow,” said Welson.

The Sarawakian, who won the 400m freestyle gold medal yesterday, did not have a fruitful day today.

He started the day with a silver medal in the boys’ open 100m backstroke before finishing fourth in the 50m freestyle. His team, Sarawak were disqualified in the 4x100m medley race. However, those were not his pet events.

Hong Kong still lead the medal tally with a haul of 50 gold, 27 silver and 18 bronze, followed by Selangor (22-35-39) and Kuala Lumpur (17-19-19).

The Star : Jinq En is just Phee-ling good over splashing show

BY TAN MING WAI

SHAH ALAM: Swimmer Phee Jinq En has played down her chances of qualifying for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games despite her rapid rise in the last nine months.

The 18-year-old breaststroke specialist has been in the fast lane ever since winning the SEA Games gold medal in Singapore last June. She has since gone on to smash the national records in the 50m and 100m events.

At the start of the year, Jinq En set herself a modest target – to dip under 1:09 in the 100m breaststroke event. Amazingly, she accomplished it in just her second outing of the year – at the Singapore National Age-Group Championships two weeks ago.

Jinq En posted a sizzling 1:08.99 to break her own previous national mark of 1:09.64 set at the FINA Swimming World Cup leg in Dubai in last November.

But the Selangor-born girl still has her work cut out for her if she’s to guarantee a spot at the Olympics with the A qualifying time of 1:07.85.

“I’ve had an amazing run since the SEA Games and am pleased with the improvements I’ve made,” said Jinq En after strolling to victory in the 50m breaststroke event in the National Age-Group Championships at the Shah Alam Aquatic Centre here on Friday.

“But I have to be realistic ... I can’t expect to dip below 1:08 and make the A cut in the next couple of months.

“After all, I’ve only managed 1:08.99 and 1:09.64 once.

“It’s okay to miss Rio as I have my sights set on Tokyo 2020. I’m happy to wait.”

The 50m breaststroke gold yesterday was Jinq En’s second in the age-group meet, following her 200m breaststroke triumph on Thursday.

Jinq En won in 32.06, followed by Erika Kong of Sarawak (33.20) and Macau’s Lei On Kei (33.68).

Jinq En can make it a hat-trick of golds when she competes in the 100m breaststroke tomorrow.

Fellow SEA Games champion Wong Fu Kang of Johor also did well to win the men’s 50m breaststroke in the 15-17 category.

He clocked 28.78 – just 0.11 of a second off his own national mark of 28.67 – to beat Malacca’s Foong Wei Tze (29.54) and Adam Afif Faizal (30.64) of Kuala Lumpur.

Golden boy Welson Sim had no problems winning the boys’ Open 400m freestyle race in 3:55.18.

Former SEA Games gold medallist Kevin Yeap of Perak claimed silver in 4:06.44 while Johor’s Tiaa Faang Der took bronze in 4:10.27.

The NST : Phee Jinq En aims to break her national record in the women's 100m breaststroke

BY AJITPAL SINGH - 1 APRIL 2016 @ 9:31 PM

SHAH ALAM: It is all systems go for Phee Jing En as the national swimmer hopes to dip below her national record in the 100m breaststroke event in the Malaysian Invitational Age Group Championships at Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre.

The 18-year-old set a new national record of 1:08.99 at the recent Singapore Age Group Championships and the swimmer believes she can further improve her mark to brighten her chances of qualifying for the Rio Olympic Games in August.

Her national record in the 100m race is inside the ‘B’ Olympic qualifying time of 1:10.22.

The ‘A’ time, which guarantees an Olympic spot, is 1:07.85.

“I think is it unrealistic to meet the ‘A’ time but I believe I can dip below my national mark.

I did not taper for the Malaysian Age Group meet but I will do my best in the 100m race,” said Jinq En today.

The 100m breaststroke event is scheduled for Sunday.

Jinq En will also have a chance to better her national record in the Malaysian Open in May and also two meets in Europe, the following month.

The swimmer won the girls’ open 50m breaststroke race today in 32.06.

Phuket-based Wong Fu Kang is also raring to push himself to the limits to qualify for the Olympics in the men’s 100m breaststroke.

He has met the ‘B’ qualifying time after clocking 1:02.46 en route to the gold medal at last year’s Singapore Sea Games.

The ‘A’ qualifying time is 1:00.57.

“Anything can happen in swimming. I have improved a lot since I moved to Phuket 16 month ago. My coach Simon Jones has been helping me clock good times,” said Fu Kang, who won the boys’ 15-17 breaststroke event in 28.78 today.

Hong Kong lead the medal tally in the Malaysian Age Group Championships with a haul of 33 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze, followed by Selangor (17-22-26) and Kuala Lumpur (12-13-13).

The NST : Malaysia Boleh: 'Wonderboy' Welson Sim on track to qualify for third Olympic event

BY AJITPAL SINGH - 31 MARCH 2016 @ 8:07 PM

SHAH ALAM: Welson Sim recorded a personal best in the boys’ open 100m freestyle race in the Malaysia Invitational Age Group Championships at Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre today.

The 18-year-old won the event in 50.32, lowering his personal best by 0.08 seconds. With the new time, Welson now has a good chance of qualifying for a third Olympic event.

His new personal best is inside the ‘B’ Olympic time of 50.70 but is still way off the 48.99 under ‘A’ category. Only those who meet the ‘A’ time are guaranteed spots at the Olympics while qualifiers under ‘B’ category are decided based on ranking.

Welson has already qualified for the Rio Olympics on merit in the 200m and 400m freestyle disciplines.

“It is great progress for me to improve my personal best in the 100m freestyle event. My ultimate goal is to break Daniel Bego’s record of 50.16 and I hope I can achieve it in the Malaysian Open in May,” said Welson today.

Welson Sim recorded a personal best in theboys' open 100m freestyle race in the Malaysia Invitational Age Group Swimming Championships at Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre today.

Katii Tang was the only one to set a new meet record today. The Hong Kong swimmer clocked 58.09 to erase Noel Leung's record of 59.14 in 2012 for the title in the girls' 13-14 100m freestyle race.

The Star : Olympian Welson just gets better at it, another record beckons

BY TAN MING WAI

Olympian Welson Sim is on track to break another national record.

SHAH ALAM: It looks like it’s only a matter of time before freestyle specialist Welson Sim adds another national record to his name.

The 18-year-old Welson, who is already the country’s best freestyle swimmer in the 200m, 400m and 800m events, is on course to wipe off Daniel Bego’s 100m freestyle national record if the pace set by him at the National Age-Group Swimming Championships at the Shah Alam Aquatic centre on Thursday is anything to go by.

Welson improved on his 100m freestyle personal best when he clocked 50.32 – just 0.16 of a second from Daniel’s 50.16 that has stood since the 2009 Laos SEA Games.

Keith Lim Kit Sern of Kuala Lumpur was second in 51.87 while Chan Jie of Selangor clocked 52.26 to finish third in the 18 and above category.

Welson’s feat comes barely 10 days after he had sprinted to a 50.40 en route to snatching a silver medal at the Singapore National Age-Group meet.

Welson has also secured two automatic Rio de Janeiro Olympic berths in the 200m and 400m freestyle events.

“It has been my dream to break all the national freestyle records, so I hope to own the 100m too. I’ll certainly go for it at the Malaysian Open (from May 5-8),” said Welson.

In the girls’ 18 and above 100m freestyle event, former national swimmer Chui Lai Kwan emerged triumphant to prove that she’s still the country’s No. 1 sprinter.

The Sabah swimmer,  a finalist at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games and Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010, touched the wall in 58.69 to finish ahead of team-mate Chris Tan Li Ling (58.94) and Selangor Chan (1:02.30).

Breaststroke specialists Wong Fu Kang and Phee Jinq En also won their 200m events.
