IBSC finalists get high points reward for their achievement in SportExcel Junior Swimming Circuit, Grand Final 2015

IBSC finalists who scored points for the Club in last year's SportExcel Junior Swimming Circuit, Grand Final 2015 are a lucky lot as they got rewarded for their achievements today in a simple ceremony. The points were converted into cash for the very first time.

The conversion was made possible with a grant allocation from Majlis Sukan Wilayah Persekutuan for the junior swimming final circuit which was held on 15-16 August, 2015 at Kompleks Renang Kuala Lumpur. The Club has channeled all the proceeds back to the swimmers as a reward to appreciate their hard work.

The points earner was each rewarded with cash prize and a certificate of achievement presented by IBSC's President, Mr Teo Mua Seng and Head Coach, En. Shazali Salleh.

The top points earner was Yeong Zhen Yi who collected 33 points to get the top cash award, followed by Steve Khiew, 29 points. See Zhi Syuen and Ng Zi Syuen, both with 17 points, shared the 3rd position.

The Club also wish to thank the parents for being so supportive of their children's sports throughout their training and hope that the athletes will progress further with their unconditional love and encouragement.

The President also reminded fellow swimmers to participate actively in SportExcel Junior Swimming Circuit which is a development platform to yield the potential of young swimmers.

IBSC has committed to giving out further incentive for the forthcoming SportExcel 2016 and swimmers will need to race faster to reach the rewards.

The Club records its appreciation to Majlis Sukan Wilayah Persekutuan and Persatuan Renang Amatur Kuala Lumpur for the grand allocation.

Fruitful golden haul for Team IBSC at SportExcel Leg 1 in Melaka

IBSC swimmers who registered to participate in the SportExcel Leg 1 in Melaka did not sum up to an impressive numbers this year, partly because many are in feverish exam mood and gave the race a miss. Only 55 IBSC swimmers swam in the meet at Stadium Akuatik Hang Jebat. The Leg 1, organised by the Malacca Amateur Swimming Association (MASA) attracted some 763 swimmers all over Malaysia.

However, we did our best to compile as much points as possible and it was indeed a blessing that our swimmers managed to top the chart in the medal tally by garnering 11 gold, 8 silver and 13 bronze. Pade Supersharks who collected the most points had 9 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze, followed by Kelab Renang MSSC with 5 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze.

Final medal tally achieved by all clubs during SportExcel Leg 1, with IBSC leading with 11 gold

Top 10 clubs - combined score

Great performances came from many swimmers (refer to table below) especially Law Li Wei who swept all tri-coloured medals in all the 8 events she participated. With a series of glorious swim, Li Wei grabbed 5 gold, 2 silver  and a bronze.

Even though Li Wei just competed in the Malaysia National Age Group only a fortnight ago, she continued to trim her times in most of her events. With her excellent achievement, Li Wei is IBSC top points earner with 188 points collected. Well done Li Wei!

The second best swimmer is non other than freestylist, Iqmal Muqhis, who scooped 2 gold in the 50m & 100m freestyle, 1 silver in 50m fly and 2 bronze in 50m & 100m breaststroke.

Meanwhile, Ng Kai Wen accumulated 2nd top notch with 152.5 points at hand and he did a surprising finish by touching the wall first in his 50m backstroke event. Excellent job!

IBSC medalists and point earners in Leg 1

Well done to all the medalists and top points achievers. Most swimmers feel jubilant with their renewed PBs once again and are eager to repeat their awesome performance in Leg 2 next month in Shah Alam.

Top 24 swimmers who collect the most points for each event both in Leg 1 (Melaka) and Leg 2 (Shah Alam) will be able to advance to the Grand Final at Kompleks Renang Kuala Lumpur, Bandar Tun Razak on 13-14 August, 2016.

The outing was a great success led by Coach Kamarudin, Coach Daniel and Mr Vincent Low as the dedicated Team Manager.  Mrs Tanya Low and Mrs Shirley Kuan were the responsible chaperons looking after the kids. Many supporting parents were sporting too contributing their instant photos, team progress and results posting on the Whats App channels to update others.

IBSC would also like to thank En. Akmal Syarifudfin from USPTN, Majlis Sukan Wilayah Persekutuan for taking his valuable time to accompany the swimmers to Melaka to gain an insight into the competition proper by the development squad.

THANK YOU ALL!

The Star : SportExcel - the cradle for junior sports in Malaysia – turns 25

BY AFTAR SINGH

PETALING JAYA: SportExcel, the Foundation for Malaysian Sporting Excellence, was established on April 8, 1991 with one aim: to focus solely on junior development and fuel the dreams of thousands of young talent.

Now, as SportExcel celebrated its silver jubilee at the Royal Selangor Club Sports Annex in Bukit Kiara on Wednesday, it can take pride from the fact that it has helped thousands of young athletes achieve their dreams in the last 25 years.

SportExcel founding chairman Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaafar said that the foundation is today the only organisation in Malaysia that serves as development with emphasis on excellence.

“I feel great satisfaction and pride in knowing that we have actually helped thousands of young Malaysian athletes chase their dream of being stars on the world stage.

“One shining example is eight-time squash world champion Nicol David, who featured in the SportExcel junior circuit,” said Tunku Imran, who is also Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president.

Other distinguished SportExcel alumni included Esther Cheah (bowling), Jeffrey Ong (swimming), Shalin Zulkifli (bowling), M. Kumaresan (cycling), Nur Herman Majid (athletics), Ben Leong (golf) and Arul Suppiah, who played county cricket in England.

SportExcel organises junior circuits for 12 sports – golf, bowling, cricket, cycling, gymnastics (artistic and rhythmic), sepak takraw, shooting, squash, swimming, taekwondo, tennis and athletics – a year.

Tunku Imran said that SportExcel received sponsorships of about RM700,000 a year from its chartered members to organise the 13 circuits and that to date more than a RM1mil has been given out under its financial aid programme.

“We hope to get more chartered members as we want to raise more money this year to help as many juniors as we can to achieve their dreams,” said Tunku Imran.

“SportExcel also has an international reach in golf, working on junior reciprocal programmes with seven countries – namely India, China, Japan, Thailand, Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. We hope to do the same with other sports in the future,” said Tunku Imran.

The Star : East Malaysia may not host any SEA Games event in 2017

BY KNG ZHENG GUAN

PETALING JAYA: Sabah and Sarawak may not host any events in the 2017 SEA Games.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja’afar said that this was because it would be costly to hold some events in those two states.

“We have to look at the cost to host the Games in 2017. Ideally, the Klang Valley is the best place to be the host as sporting venues are easily accessible,” said Tunku Imran.

“If we were to have it in Sabah or Sarawak, there may be more travelling costs incurred for the visiting nations.

“But we are looking to see if KL has enough venues. Nothing is confirmed yet until the SEA Games Federation meeting in February next year.”

He said this after attending a SportExcel function at the Royal Selangor Club here. At the function, Tunku Imran, who is also the chairman of SportExcel, handed out grants worth RM59,500 to 45 junior athletes from 10 different sports.

The sports are golf, bowling, cricket, cycling, gymnastics, shooting, squash, swimming, taekwondo and tennis.

Tunku Imran also spoke about karate’s possible inclusion at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The sport has been shortlisted by the Tokyo Olympic Committee together with baseball/softball, surfing, skateboard and sport climbing.

He urged the Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf) to make good use of the opportunities to promote themselves.

“Of course it’s not a done deal yet for karate as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) still have to make their decision next August,” said Tunku Imran.

“But any sport that gets into the Olympics would receive tremendous interest ... just like taekwondo when it first got into the Olympics in 1988.

“It’s now up to Makaf to produce a programme for medal winners in 2020. They’ve always done well at the World Championships but winning a gold medal at the Olympics will be a lot tougher.

“It would have been great also if bowling and squash had made the list (for the Tokyo Olympics). As a former president of the World Squash Federation (1989-2002) and who first started the bid campaign, I am devastated but I’m sure the sport will get there one day.”

IBSC swimmers worked hard for SportExcel Leg 2

The SportExcel Junior Swimming Circuit offered opportunities for the young learners to test themselves out in the water and recently Leg 1 of the circuit was organised by Malacca Amateur Swimming Association at Hang Jebat Aquatic Stadium on 9-10 May, 2015. Meanwhile, Leg 2 was hosted by Selangor Amateur Swimming Association at Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre, Shah Alam just last week on 13-14 June, 2015.

Group 2 girls plunging backwards in a backstroke start
Team IBSC registered only 66 swimmers for the away meet in Melaka as most kids were either having exam fever or some other events have collided with the meet. However, registration for Leg 2 swelled to 120 swimmers as it's nearer to home.

Overall, IBSC swimmers did fairly well for both legs considering the huge gap left by the over-aged swimmers. It is evident that the younger group still need more time to be developed and groomed to realise their full potential. Consistent with these expectations, IBSC was runner-up in both Legs.

Swimmers have swam hard to earn points and the spirit of togetherness both from the swimmers and parents in this game ought to be praised as the whole team gave their best shot. Points earned, no matter how little, added up the total sum, thanks to the achievers below.
