Jun Jian shoveled second silver for Team MAS in Asean School Games on closing day

On the first event competed on the last day of swimming competition in the 8th Asean School Games (ASG) 2016 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, today, Chan Jun Jian was registered in the 1500m freestyle.

Little did he expect that swimming with a focus mind could yield results especially when the other competitors were seeded faster than him.

In the long distance event, he clocked an impressive 17: 05.16 to grab the silver behind Thai swimmer, Wanphen Chakorn, who won with 16:29.43.

Jun Jian's previous PB was 17:23.36 swam in Sept 2015 in the Selangor Long Distance Swimming Championship 2015. It is great achievement indeed to have shed so many seconds!

Interviewed online, here is what an exulting Jun Jian accounted for his silver experience.

"On the first few days of ASG, I only managed 4th in my 400m freestyle and 6th in my 200m freestyle. At that time, I was really disappointed but thanks to my friends and family, I was able to pull through my 1500m freestyle today.

A night before when I saw the start list, I thought I wouldn't stand a chance to win because other swimmers' seeding was a lot faster. So I didn't think too much and just tried to get a new personal best.

As I dived into the pool I paced with a Singaporean swimmer. I continued by best and was happy to able to come in second. It was really unexpected and I am glad to contribute a silver to the country.

Words cannot express my feeling at that time.

I would like to thank my coaches for giving me valuable tips and advise.

My next aim is to qualify to SUKMA in the next 2 years and I will be looking forward to improving my times further."

 CONGRATULATIONS Chan Jun Jian!

The Star : A golden summer holiday for Daniel in Kuching

KUCHING: What a summer holiday it has turned out to be for Selangor swimmer Daniel Lim Jun Liang!

The 20-year-old, who’s of Malaysian-Scottish parentage, has marked his Sukma debut in Kuching by etching his name into the record books.

The unheralded Daniel made heads turn at the Sarawak Aquatic Centre when he stunned the more illustrious Wong Fu Kang to the 200m breaststroke gold medal – and smashed Sukma’s oldest record, which was held by Elvin Chia.

The Selangor swimmer’s time of 2:19.12 erased Elvin’s old mark of 2:19.17, which was set at the Pahang Sukma in 1996 – the year Daniel was born!

“I’m extremely pleased with that!” said Daniel, who is studying mechanical engineering at the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.

“I’ve never done a Sukma before, so it was a great experience. I came here expecting nothing, but just to swim a better time.

“My personal best is actually 2:19.00, which I did during the Malaysian Open last year.”

Daniel’s latest effort means that the last of former Asian Games bronze medallist Elvin’s record has been obliterated after another of his 20-year-old mark in the 100m breaststroke had been erased by Fu Kang last Saturday.

Daniel returned to the pool shortly after to power the Selangor relay team to the 4x200m victory. The quartet of Daniel, Tan Yun Hung, Jordan Yip and Yeap Zheng Yang clocked 7:43.67 to shatter Welson Sim-led Sarawak’s previous mark of 7:47.31.

Before, Daniel had also won a silver (50m breaststroke) and a bronze (100m breaststroke) as well as being in the quartet that clinched the 4x100m freestyle gold.

Selangor’s Chan Jie was the other star performer of the day.

The 21-year-old butterfly specialist retained his 100m title convincingly – with an improved 54.80 to erase his own previous Sukma record of 55.04.

Yap Siew Hui (women’s 50m butterfly) and Zheng Yang (men’s 400m freestyle) bagged two more golds as Selangor took their gold medal tally to 16 at the end of the penultimate day of the swimming competition.

They have now surpassed the 11-gold haul at the Perlis Games two years ago.

Hosts Sarawak also stamped their mark by winning three gold medals.

Angela Chieng (400m freestyle) and Erika Kong (200m breaststroke) won their events before returning to anchor their 4x200m freestyle relay team to victory together with Cindy Sui and Leong Wan Mei.

The swimming competition ends Wednesday, with seven golds up for grabs.

Golden girl Christina claimed second meet record in SUKMA XVIII 2016

Christina Loh proved to be a golden girl indeed having smashed a second met record of her own in SUKMA XVIII 2016 in Kuching on the third day of the bi-annual championship.

It was a heart stopping moment to watch Christina glided neck to neck with Koh Jia Yi (Sel) in the 50m breaststroke event but undoubtedly it was her seasoned experience and great finishing touch that rewarded her with a new record. Christina bettered her previous 2012 record of 33.40 with a faster time of 33.29.

Koh Jia Yi (Sel) took silver (33.42) whilst Caryn Kay Chan (Trg) settled for bronze (34.64).

Ong Ming Fen collected her third silver when she came second in the 800m freestyle. The gold went the host, Sarawak, represented by Angela Chieng. Bronze went to Rosalind Pang (Sel).

Meanwhile, another peak episode of the day was in the 200m butterfly event. Tia'a Faang Der broke a long standing record belonging to Alex Lim of 2:03.91 (2000) when he shed it by almost a second to 2:02.93.

WIPER's swimmers Wong Jun Bin and Tan Gin Yu both followed in twin velocity to take the silver (2:08.21) and bronze (2:08.35) respectively.
