IBSC swimmers made an impact in NAG 2013

The 49th Malaysia Invitational Age Group Swimming Championship 2013 held in Bukit Jalil last weekend from 19-21 April 2013 proved to be a great competitive deck for swimmers to race and test their abilities, especially with the presence of Hong Kong swimmers, posing greater challenges in the pool.

The championship was also sanctioned as a qualifying meet for the SEA Age Group Swimming Championship 2013 in Brunei, 15th FINA World Championship 2013 in Barcelona and also the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games 2014 in Nanjing.

The competition witnessed many records being broken and a number of champions qualifying themselves into the regional and world championships.

IBSC swimmers selected to represent the state of Kuala Lumpur did excellently well especially the younger batch of swimmers, some of whom made their first debut in the national age group championship and yet performed with flying colours.

Siblings, Kimberly Ong, 12 and brother, David Ong, 9 both qualified for the said competition for the first time and so did Phoebe Law, 11, and Lee Jia Jing,10, all of whom collected handful of medals.

Lee Jia Jing (red cap) swam to gold in his 50m breaststroke (38.09s) and 100m breaststroke (1:19.97s) with David Ong (blue cap) finishing second in the same events under the 10 years old group.

Kimberly Ong clinched gold in her 50m breaststroke with impressive time of 35.40s to dip below the SEA Age Group (SAG) qualifying mark of 36.28s under the Group 3 girls category.

Kimberly Ong made an impressive maiden entry into NAG by qualifying herself to SAG in the 50m breaststroke event

Meanwhile, Tan Rou Ying, who has recently joined the national squad based in Bukit Jalil, has also done well in her 200m freestyle with a renewed PB of 2:12.59s to qualify for SAG 2013.

National swimmers Ian James Barr and Christina Loh also earned themselves a place in the same meet. Christina achieved a hat-trick, not only in her pet events of 50m and 100m breaststroke but also in 50m butterfly by clocking 33.20s, 1:12.10s and 29.46s respectively to book a place in SAG.

Christina is another contender for SAG 2013

Ian, on the other hand surfaced victoriously when he perfected his own open record to claim gold in 100m and 200m breaststroke with a better time of 1:06.31s and 2:20.96s respectively, both times of which met the SAG benchmarks.

Ian James Barr, an IM specialist, proved that his breaststroke is equally good to his added advantage

Apart from SAG, Tan Gin Yu, who is based in Singapore Sports School, saw himself qualified further to attend the Youth Olympic Games 2014 when he touched second at 2:07.22s in the 200m butterfly event to claim the silver medal, behind Vernon Lee of Sarawak.

Other IBSC swimmers did profoundly well too in improving theirs PBs in leaps and bounds and shall prove to be future champions too.

(OR) - NAG open record

The IBSC swimmers would not be able to achieve such great timings if not for the great effort put in by their coaches and the continuous support of the parents. Special mention goes to Coach He Tinglan of PRAKL and Coach Shazali Salleh, head coach of IBSC for the hard work in grooming the swimmers.

Congratulations again to all winners of NAG 2013 and all the best to those who are going to face stiffer competition in SEA Age Group Swimming Championship 2013 and the Youth Olympic Games 2014.
