The Star Sports : Teen sensation Hoe Yean wants to rule in 800m too

PETALING JAYA: Swimming sensation Khiew Hoe Yean (pic) is ready to make the 800m freestyle his new pet event.

The 18-year-old backstroke specialist showed he is just as capable in the middle distance freestyle disciplines with a stellar performance at the Malaysian Open last week.

While smashing former Asian Games gold medallist Lim Keng Liat’s 23-year-old record in the 200m backstroke was something expected from Hoe Yean, his record-breaking feat in the 800m freestyle was nothing short of extraordinary.

Swimming alone and competing for the first time in the event did not stop him from logging a creditable 8:06.00, bettering Welson Sim’s 2019 national record of 8:08.77.

Besides making the Olympic Selection Time (OST) of 8:08.54, that effort would place Hoe Yean seventh at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.

This achievement augurs well for Hoe Yean in the future as the event is expected to be featured in more major multi-sport Games.

The men’s 800m freestyle was previously only contested at the World Championships, but it had since been included in the 2018 Asiad and is set to make its debut at the Tokyo Olympics.

“I already have a number of pet events, so I wouldn’t mind adding the 800m free into the list,” said Hoe Yean.

“I’m very pleased to have set a new national record on my first attempt but rest assured there will be more to come.

“There’s one Vietnamese (Asian Games bronze medallist Nguyen Huy Hoang) who’s really fast, so it’s good to have a superior competitor to look up to and keep myself motivated.”

Apart from the 800m, Welson’s dominance in his two other pet events could be under threat if Hoe Yean keeps trending in the right direction.

Hoe Yean signalled his intention to hunt down Welson’s two national records in the 200m freestyle (1:47.36) and 400m freestyle (3:49.29) by triumphing over the latter last week

Hoe Yean’s victories came with personal bests of 1:49.38 in the 200m freestyle and 3:51.56 in the 400m freestyle.

He will be keeping his fingers crossed that the Vietnam SEA Games will proceed as scheduled as he is eager to prove himself on the international stage.

In his debut in the Philippines two years ago, Hoe Yean clinched two bronzes medals – in the 200m backstroke and 4x200m freestyle.

Semalam, Hoe Yean memecahkan rekod kebangsaan berusia 23 tahun, 200m kuak lentang dengan mencatatkan masa 2:00.80s memadamkan rekod 2:00.94s bekas bintang negara Alex Lim Keng Liat.

The Star Sports : Hoe Yean’s unstoppable in the pool as he breaks national record again

By TAN MING WAI

PETALING JAYA: Teen sensation Khiew Hoe Yean is simply unstoppable as he capped off a superb week at the Malaysian Open swimming championships with another national record.

And he did it in style as the record fell in his first attempt in the men’s 800m freestyle.

Despite swimming alone, the 18-year-old managed to clock 8:06.00 at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukil Jalil yesterday to erase Welson Sim’s previous mark of 8:08.77 in 2019.

Hoe Yean’s effort made the Olympic Selection Time (OST) of 8:08.54.

Impressive feat: Khiew Hoe Yean clocked 8:06.00 in the men’s 800m freestyle event of the Malaysian Open at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukil Jalil.

On Saturday, Hoe Yean broke the 23-year-old record held by Welson in the 400m freestyle.

With barely an hour of rest, Hoe Yean returned to the pool and outpaced Welson in the 200m freestyle when he touched the wall in a brilliant 1:49.38, way ahead of second-placed Welson who managed 1:50.64 – a far cry from his own national mark of 1:47.36 in 2017.

Hoe Yean did better than his previous personal best of 1:51.26 and it earned him another OST as his effort was well under the 1:50.23 qualifying mark. Hoe Yean was delighted with his performance after netting four personal bests on his first return to competition since the National Age-Group Championships in March last year.

“It feels great. It’s my first time swimming the 800m free but my target was to break the record. I was however surprised but satisfied with my 200m free,” said Hoe Yean.

“Every single competition is real even though there’s no spectators or competitors. I will always take every meet seriously.

“I’m very pleased because I showed improvement each day and ended the meet with four personal bests. I will build on it!”

Hoe Yean has just given Malaysia Swimming (MS) a good reason to pick him instead of Welson for the Olympics.

Currently, Welson and Phee Jinq En are the only Malaysian swimmers who have made the OST list based on their results at the 2019 Sea Games in the Philippines but the national body intend to use the universality places allocation, where they can recommend one male and female.

Asked if he harbours hope of securing his Olympics debut, said Hoe Yean: “ I don’t know about it but I believe I have done my best by swimming as fast as I can. The rest is beyond my control.”

Bernama : Renang: Hoe Yean pecahkan rekod 23 tahun

Utusan Online : Sebastian pecah rekod kebangsaan

"Saya sangat gembira kerana saya hanya mensasarkan pingat emas, kejayaan memperbaharui rekod negara sebenarnya bukan sasaran saya," katanya.

- BERNAMA

The Star : Double joy in the pool

KUALA LUMPUR: Sebastian Soon finally got his revenge in the pool.

The 17-year-old reclaimed the national 400m individual medley record in 4:28.34 en route to the gold medal at the Malaysian Open swimming championships at the National Aquatic Centre here yesterday.

He shaved more than two seconds of the previous time of 4:30.48 set by Tia’a Faang Der at the Sukma in Ipoh last year.

Terengganu’s Arvin Shaun Singh clocked 4:30.47 for the silver while Faang Der settled for the bronze (4:33.63).

It was indeed sweet revenge for Sebastian as he lost to Faang Der at the Sukma.

“A few months before Sukma I broke the record with 4:30.85 at the Asean Schools Games and everybody had high hopes on me to better my time,” said Sebastian.

“And I was also eyeing a gold or two but Faang Der spoilt my party. Not only he won the gold, he also set a new record. So this win is kind of satisfying.

“I was also pretty nervous because in the afternoon everyone was doing good times.

“The record was a bonus as I wasn’t expecting it. I was only aiming for the gold and beat Arvin because he has been improving lately.”

Sebastian will now take part in the 1,500m today where he will be up against hot favourite Welson Sim.

Welson came close to breaking his own 200m freestyle record when he clocked 1:47.48 just shy of the previous time of 1:47.36.

“Although my time is a bit off, I know I can go faster than that,” said Welson.

“During the race, I was feeling exhausted and I was like dragging my legs. It’s like my legs had no more battery.”

Nonetheless it was enough for him to secure his third gold medal after he won the 400m and 100m freestyles earlier.

He smashed the 100m record with a time of 49.54 on Friday.

The Star : Welson must work on mental strength to bag hat-trick of golds

BY LIM TEIK HUAT

MALACCA: Welson Sim has to improve on his mental toughness if he wants to be the first Malaysian swimmer to sweep the 200m, 400m and 1,500m freestyle golds at the SEA Games.

The 20-year-old eased off in the final few laps but still claimed victory in the men’s 1,500m freestyle of the Malaysia Open Swimming Championships at the Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre in Malacca yesterday.

The Rio Olympian clocked 15:43.50, not far off his personal best of 15:31.10 at the Singapore National Age-Group Championships in March this year.

India’s Sajan Prakash took the silver in 15:50.02 while Thai Kittiya Tanakrit secured the bronze in 16:00.88.

It was Welson’s fourth gold after finishing first in the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle.

Welson is favoured to win the 200m and 400m freestyle but will have a battle on his hands in the gruelling 1,500m at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games from Aug 19-30.

Welson did not compete in the 1,500m freestyle in his SEA Games debut in Singapore two years ago but took gold in the 400m freestyle and bronze in the 200m freestyle.

Malaysian coach Paul Birmingham, however, is not expecting Welson to improve on his personal best in the 1,500m freestyle so soon.

“This is not the time to peak. We will work more on the 1,500m after we return home from the Mare Nostrum series (in Monaco, Spain and France) next month.

“Physically Welson has the fitness but it’s more of a mental thing to be good in the 200m, 400m and 1,500m. It’s really a painful commitment as the training set is different when you are swimming the 200m and 1,500m,” said Birmingham.

The Star :Welson sets new meet record in winning 200m freestyle

BY LIM TEIK HUAT

MALACCA: Welson Sim (pic) clocked a season-best time to break his own meet record in the men’s 200m freestyle at the Malaysia Open Swimming Championships.

The 20-year-old splashed to his third gold for Sarawak in 1:48.50 at the Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre yesterday.

Welson, who had earlier won the 100m and 400m freestyle, set the previous meet record of 1:48.64 in last year’s edition in Shah Alam.

Daniel Bego, also of Sarawak, took the silver in 1:53.61 ahead of Selangor’s Yeap Zheng Yang, who posted 1:53.82 for the bronze.

Welson’s time yesterday was better than the winning mark of 1:48.96 recorded by Vietnam’s Hoang Quy Phuoc at the 2015 Singapore SEA Games. Welson won the 400m freestyle but could only manage a bronze in the 200m freestyle in Singapore.

“I’m happy to set the fastest time in South-East Asia this year for the 200m freestyle. I pushed hard in the morning although it was just the heats and I qualified for the final with the fastest time (1:50.31),” said Welson.

“It was a good practice. I need to swim like this to get into the final at the SEA Games (in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 19-30).

“I am also happy for Daniel as he came back after injury to finish second and qualify for the SEA Games relay team,” said Welson, who holds the national 200m freestyle record of 1:47.67.

Tern Jian Han also grabbed his third gold for Johor, winning the men’s 50m butterfly in a personal best time of 24.96. He had earlier won the 50m and 100m backstroke.

The Star : Jian Han bags a double with win in 100m backstroke

MALACCA: Malaysia have yet to produce a top backstroke swimmer since Lim Keng Liat quit after the 2006 Asian Games in Doha.

But Malaysia may have finally found an able replacement in Tern Jian Han.

The 22-year-old splashed to his second gold medal in the Malaysia Open Swimming Championships at the Hang Jebat Aquatic Centre in Malacca yesterday.

Johor-born Jian Han posted a personal best of 56.95 in the men’s 100m backstroke final to achieve the double after coming out tops in the 50m backstroke on Thursday.

Thailand’s Kasipat Chograthin took silver in the men’s 100m backstroke final in 58.43 while Indonesia’s Rai Wratsangka Adityastha got the bronze in 59.60.

Jian Han, who has been in the national team since 2011, was delighted to continue with his good form.

He had also chalked up a personal best of 26.12 in the 50m backstroke. His time is not too far off Keng Liat’s national mark of 25.67 set in winning silver at the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002.

“I’m happy with my time in the 100m backstroke ... this is the first time I’ve gone under 57 seconds.

“I did 58.20 in the Singapore national age-group in March, so I am swimming faster,” said Jian Han, who will be making his fourth SEA Games appearance in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 19-30.

With tougher rivals expected at the SEA Games, the Universiti Malaya second-year Sports Science student will have his work cut out for him.

Singapore’s Quah Zheng Wen set a new SEA Games record in winning the event in his backyard in 54.51 two years ago.

“I hope to win my first SEA Games individual medal. Hopefully, I can improve on my endurance as I tend to fade away in the last 25m,” said Jian Han, who took bronze as part of the 4x100m medley quartet in the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar.
